I have a stupid problem I hope some clever freddy can help me with.

I have a vista machine that is unable (unwilling) to connect to an XP machine, it's shares etc, using it's machine name, but is willing to connect using the IP address. If I try to browse it using the Machine name I get a Username / Password prompt that doesn't accept any valid input. But if I navigate using the IP address it works fine.

I've tried using another Vista machine and it works fine, so the problem is with this machine. Tried everything I can think of and still no joy. Anyone had the same problem?

You don't mention if you've put them in the same work group. Have you tried that?

Check under user accounts and network credentials see if it has a remembered one for the pc name. If it does delete it and try again.

Does the name ping back to the right address? Have you used machinename\user and password or it will think its using the xp machine admin account?

I've had problems in the past getting Vista and XP to play nicely together on the network... Think in the end I was able to connect to the XP machine from Vista if I did the following:-

On the XP machine, opened my computer, clicked tools->folder options->view tab and towards the end of the list, there's an option for simple file sharing. I UNchecked this option.

I was then able to connect to the XP machine from Vista, when prompted for username/password, I used XPMachineName\XPUsername + XPPassword and was able to connect...

But it can be a bit of a b*gger to get working correctly though...

Nope thats all fine, it does ping back on Name and IP.... Sometimes "it decides" randomly to give me a couple mins of access time before deciding it does'n;t want to anymore..

I won't lie i'm downloading Win 7 RC as we speak...

It's weird sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't I need the network to work as I need network shares.... RAGE, just another issue with Vista that's been busting my balls since I installed the stupid thing.

I'm not going to lie! That although Win 7 is amazingly better than Vista.. the problem is still there! so... for some reason this particular pc is being hated by the XP machine. Which thus means it's a problem with the XP machine.

DAMN YOU Microsoft!

net use \\IPADDRESS

works

net use \\CompName

fails...

The password or user name is invalid for \\CompName.

Enter the user name for CompName : xxxxxx
Enter the password for CompName: xxxxxx

System error 1326 has occurred.
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Why o why I don't know... pain in arse.

I had this problem (or something similar) but solved it. I was confused why there was a username and password prompt when I never set any passwords.

It's a long time since I did this, plus im on the work pc so cant be too accurate.

The pc's can see each other, but you cannot access them due to the logon prompt. I right clicked on the PC Name (for the machine i was on) which appeared in the network neighbourhood area. Under properties I could set a username and password. I went onto the XP machine and did the same.

When I next tried to connect to the other machine, i typed in the details and it gave me access. From then onwards I've never typed the details in again.

p.s. as mentioned, this was a long time back so my memories meh!

If using the IP works why not map your shares via IP and use it that way?

But creating a user account on the Vista machine and using that username and password should work.

Vista is probably being the "best" out of the 2. Vista and Win7 have much improved networking which "just works" between them. However bring in something like XP or OS X and things can get a bit more annoying.

Basic steps to take are use simple file sharing, make sure guest account is enabled, allow non-password protected shares etc.

But basically Windows file sharing has always been hit and miss due to the way it works (master browser etc.). I'm not sure how much of that got changed with Vista/Win7, but my OS X laptop can connect (by name) to my desktop instantly, where as it used to take a few hours before it realised it was there with XP

On the vista pc try this. GO to Network, then your pc. You should have a folder called Public?

Right click on this and goto properties. Make sure the Network Tab has the same Workgroup as the XP machine.

Next goto the Security Tab and click on Everyone and make sure these are ticked.
Read & Execute
List folders and contents
Read

Apply the changes and close.

When you go onto the XP machine, go into the Network area and you should see your Router. When you go into here it should display your XP machine & the Vista machine. If you now click on the Vista machine it should let you in.

If prompted for a username and password, enter the logon details of the other machine (like Strangely Brown mentions)
