I installed a pc at my Dad's today. The old one had become really corrupted - no start menu/bar. Before fitting the new unit, I tried to pull his files off the old pc using windows explorer....to my frustration, explorer couldnt move/copy/paste any of his files.

All the data and the OS, Xp home, were fitted on a single drive.

So I'm thinking I'll fit the old drive into the new pc. Thing is, I'm guessing his old my documents wont be freely accessible due the users element of the file system..have I got htis right?

Any admin can access any hard drive attached to the system, so if you stick it in the new computer can just give yourself permission to everything.

And then if that fails, a good ol' LiveCD with your linux distribution of choice (I use Ubuntu) is wonderful for data recovery in such a manner - doesn't give a shit about NTFS's security systems and reads NTFS in such a different way that even physically corrupt drives can be quite readable/recoverable.
