I wanted to know how much it would cost to get from where I live near Hastings to Nuneaton where my friend lives. So I went on the national rail website and looked. Leaving on the 5th Dec and coming back on the 8th costs £132.40 whereas the same journey in January only costs £16. It's fucking unreal how much train fares are around christmas.

try looking at prices either along different routes that have special offers or buying each ticket (between stations)individually as it can sometimes end up cheaper that way...

but if not heres some cheery news... train ticket prices are rising by 6% in january woopee :p

Try messing about on here:

http://www.thetrainline.com/

Tends to be more use than the British Rail website. Guessing you passing thru London for that journey, if you it's during peak time you will get hammered on the price (any journey which includes arriving in london between 7am and 10am, and leaving between 3pm and 7pm iirc).

the difference in the fares is extremely annoying. especially as they charge more for the times they would have more people, so they rake in the cash even more.
maybe they really want to avoid buying more trains, so they try to price it too high for the average joe or something... who knows.
should re-model the train network on Japan's imo, they're always on time, and the fares are always the same for the distance travelled (on the same operator). Makes things so much better. guess that's the reason though why trains are so popular there, but over here everyone would rather drive or even take a coach.

They are going up again soon.

The whole system is falling a part, to many years of mismanagement and in more modern times, greedy companies who only want to make profit, not invest.

Fares like this are usually cheaper the further in advance you book as they allocate batches of tickets at different price brackets. Therefore the cheaper ones sell out first. You may find that if you look at the same website to book the january ticket just after christmas the price wont be so cheap.

Having said that £16 to £132.40 for the same seat in the same class It's Wobbery .....WOBBERY I TELLS YER !!!!

Train prices are a fucking joke in general. When my parents lived at home in Kent and I was at uni in Bristol booking over 2 weeks in advance and with a railcard, I could get tickets for £8.60 each way.......however now its fucking unreal. To go from Bristol to where my family live in Scotland (East Kilbridge- an hour away from Glasgow) booking 3-4 months in advance with a railcard they're trying to charge £120 return when a plane costs £15-20. I don't understand why trains arn't piss cheap by now when planes cost next to nothing surely with the whole carbon emissions thing also I'm pretty certain a plane is much worse for the environment, and they should be encouraging people to use trains.

The money saving expert told me a tip, well not personally but on his site, if you break the journey down and buy tickets by stops its much cheaper

I tried it once, journey from London to Glasgow £153

So done London to Carlisle £26
Carlisle to Glasgow £6
Glasgow to Carlisle £6
Carlisle to London £19

Total £57

And it was on the same train too as i worked out the times when the train arrived and left in carlisle so i didnt even have to get off my seat!
