Yeah you can boot of them, there are many solutions I suggest you hunt around for what suits you best. If you have the money I would get something with 2 drives configured to Raid 1 they are coming down in price but are still a few hundred £, if you don't have the money I would consider 2-3 300g drives.

Also consider USB powered drives rather than ones that require a separate power supply, you wont get as large a drive but its less hassle.

Big drives are nice but fuck that shit if you loose a disk. I have 3 x 200g drives, 1 for data, 1 for music and 1 for moves/TV stuff, i don't like putting all my eggs in 1 basket, but if you have never lost data you prolly won't give a toss. :p

Seen some 1Tb ones on the market for just over 100 GBP here during the Dubai Shopping Festival so the prices have really come down.

Personally have a 500Gb USB that is PSU powered and a few straight USB powered. Of the straight USB ones the Western Digital Passport 250 Gb P/N WD2500U017-005 has been excellent.

I keep backups of my important work projects plus some movies and music to keep me going whilst away from home. Gets totally abused all over the world and never let me down. They are now up to 320 Gb and excellent value imo.

Meh, I prefer internal disks with a caddy, mainly because decent caddys are cheap as fuck these days and so are most internal drives.

I have a 1TB Westerdigital esential and two 160gb Pasport drives which have all been great. I also have a Buffalo Terstation which is NAS with raid as my backup. I would reccomend Western Digital i have a 3+ year old 200gb disk that is still going strong. The Terastation i got cheap through work because it blew the disks but the new firmware is better fingers crossed.
