Ok, first off, what is the exact name of the process with multiple instances running? Is it "iexplore.exe", "iexplorer.exe", "iexplor.exe" or something else?

Second, what anti-virus software are you running, and are your virus definitions up-to-date? You should be able to run this update automatically - try that, and then scan your system again.

You might also benefit from going to http://housecall.antivirus.com and running their free online virus scan - it might pick something up that your current AV software doesn't.

Also, are you running any third-party popup-blocking software (the main thing I can think of is called Yahoo! Companion, that's apparently caused a few problems for people in the past)

You might also want to download and run AdAware or Spybot - they should root out any nasty spyware/adware you've got hiding on your box, which could be causing the problem.

Finally, the obligatory recommendation that, for your everyday browsing, you use a more secure browser such as Firefox or Opera - it won't do much for you this time, but it should help you to avoid such problems in the future.

Hope that helps -kind regards ;)

Is it when you open a certain site, or as soon as you open the browser?

Yes, it's probably ok. Yes, there's probably better.

ZoneAlarm is fine - something like Outpost is rather more flexible, but less easy to use.

Personally, I would suggest either AdAware or Spybot for your adware-removal needs - I haven't heard of Noadware, but if it seems to work, keep using it. Using Firefox for general browsing should make it harder for spyware to get on your system, with a bit of luck.

If there was nothing wrong with IE, we would all be using it happily. If bleeting about firefox gets people to try it, then I'm all for the pimpage.

If you're running Windows XP, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and download Service Pack 2. Not only does this add a well designed pop-up blocker to IE without the need for any extra toolbars, but it also locks it down better than before so that if/when you do need to use Internet Explorer, it wont cripple your system. In terms of "in use", it still doesn't put it on the same turf as Firefox though.
