it seemed last week i twated the exhaust off the road. now im not an expert so i am going to use simple launguage for what i can see is down there

- the bit that comes out the back of your car, the pipe bit, still seems fairly attached.

- on the pipe bit you have the big thing, i guess its some kind of filter.

- now i can see this big bit has fallen low. and if my eyes dont decieve me, it appears it should be connected to the rest of the pipe things

- i can see there is a pipe after the big bit but its just a hole there.

now im assuming this pipe bit should connect to the big thing.

what i want to know is what adverse effects will this have on my car except the horrible noise.

my car is a 1.4 petrol polo

1) You will possibly lose fuel economy.
2) Your car will fail its MOT
3) If the cops pull you for the noise, you'll get a nice fine
4) Rust will attack the exhaust
5) You risk fumes entering your vehicle

The 'filter' thing is a backbox, the purpose of which is as a muffler, and also to equalise the pressure.

You need to get that pipe reconnected ASAP. If you're lucky it can be welded back on, if you're unlucky its a whole new backbox and tailpipe for ya.

Don't go to Kwik-Fit. Find a good local VW indie and take it from there. You can find a good indie by joining a VW forum and asking.

just an update so no one else needs to reply now.

phoned a recognised vw garage. they recommended another place because its the cheapest price for the high quality.

in the end it was snapped in 2 places. im guessing one of those has been there for a while, the car has never ran so well.

didnt realise the important of the exhaust system untill now

70 quid. full replacement, fitting, straight in and straight out.

it was gonna be 40 quid just for the backbox. so to me it didnt seem bad.

depends on the car and how many pieces make up an exhaust.

If you have a cat, then (for a saxo) it was £190 just for the convertor.

Blimey you got a good deal there.

A dealer would have charged £70 for the first hour's labour alone!
