Seems that the humble floppy drive is on it's way out. Only reason I can see for having them now is as a very useful emergency boot device when everything else goes tits up....

Don't know why I posted this, I'm just bored really. Feel free to immeadiately take this off-topic.

You dont even need it for emergency boot device nowadays, most mobo's can boot directly from CD anyway.

DVDs have even beefier data storage abilities, with a one-sided, single-layer disc able to hold about 4.4GB, and a double-sided, double-layer DVD offering almost 16GB of capacity.

Shame that there are no burnable dual layer dvds, and there probably won't be for some time because obviously people will rent/copy dvds till the cows come home. Which they won't :/

aye. I get seriously rankled whilst using floppys. The bloody write protection thing is open......the files are corrupted......your file is too large by 1kb......takes fucking forever to copy/write too.

Getting a thumb drive soon anyway (128mb) which will make transferring coursework (which has files over 2 mb) a helleva lot more easier.

I broke my FDD when building my new PC back in August last year, didn't bother getting a new one and haven't even needed to use it yet.

Without a floppy, flashing my BIOS this morning would have been really tricky.

My FreeBSD machine was built sans FDD, and when I attepted to upgrade the HDD the BIOS would allow more than 32Gb, had to quickly install a FDD to get the BIOS flashed, I was surprized I managed to get a new BIOS as the mobo is quite old, a Slot One 440BX no less (Abit BX6v2).

Problem is not booting from CD, it is making a bootable CD in the first place, for that you need a CD-RW and under Windows it can sometimes be tricky getting it to work (check this out).

Actually, the 3.5" disks should be called "stiffies".

Only the 5.25" disks were actually "floppy", I still have 250 of these bastards from years back.

Aren't you old enough to grow out of that sort of humour? :p

So was mine, however, my Windows CD refuses to boot (don't ask too closely, but it is legal, honest) and I need to use floppies to kick-start the install.

That was...I can't believe it...on topic.

The only annoying thing was the size.

Yes, I think the removal of my Floppy Disk drive will be my next alteration to my PC, it will remove another cable from the spaghetti junction that is my PC case :(

A friend of mine got a new pc last month and decided to go for a usb floppy drive. :/

Seemed like a good idea to me.

only use of them i can think of is boot discs. But every modern OS cd is bootable these days, so they're pretty redundant even for that.
