EVE out today????

Bought it, but don't want to install it until I've got time for a sit-down and proper look at it....

....reading the manual I was dismayed to find the combat section saying all sorts of pointy-clicky-icony stuff rather than grab-joysticky-and-fly-about-elite-stylee stuff :(

I know it's a MMORPG but there's no excuse for any sort of space-style sim thing without the use of a JOYSTICK.

Please - someone tell me I'm wrong :(

You're not wrong. No joystick in EVE and no in-cockpit view. Hence, no immersion. :(

It is mouse based because it is not an FPS "twich" game, there is an element of reaction based skill but it is more to do with what ship equipment you have rather than how l33t you are with a railgun.

Besides, combat is a tiny part of the game, I played though most of the beta phase 6 without firing a shot.

Ignore Summo, he doesn't understand the gameplay, it is more important to visualize your surroundings in EVE, not available in a restricted cockpit view. Besides, it all depends on the radar and detection systems, not visual contact, a lot of kills can be made when the enemy is a dot in the sky.

Otherwise I suppose there is no "immersion" in RTS games or Civilization either, they don't have "in-cockpit view".

But my point was... what I meant to say... you can't get... hey, screw you!

A simple question from a simple man re : EVE....

is it just about mining and fuck all else?

I know you can fight other players etc but I mean to actually get ANYWHERE I just have to mine rocks for weeks on end whilst dodging newbie killers?

From what I've seen mining is the best thing to do at the start, and once you've got some cash there are more options.

Since the start I had a feeling that eve would be great once it had matured, might be wrong but think I'll stick with it to find out.

Sounds like the combat is gonna suck cock :(

The RPG side of it sounds like great fun. But, lets face it, 90% of the people who buy it (me included) think this is going to be an RPG version of Elite - with the flying about shooting shit thang.

The most disappointing thing I've heard all month is:

Besides, it all depends on the radar and detection systems, not visual contact, a lot of kills can be made when the enemy is a dot in the sky.

:(

Ho-hum. I'll give it a fair go (may change my mind) but ATM it looks like Planetside is going to be the one that gets the subs from me unfortunately.... I was really wanting Elite with real depth.....

Thanks...sounds like one to wait on tbh. I don't want to spend 3 weeks or so mining for some doley pikey who lives and breathes the game to come along and zap me and start all over again.

Sounds like PS as in it needs more content. Mind you it sounds like heaven compared to Daoc, I'd rather stab myself in the eyes than play that again.

Fantastic. I've found what I'm going to do to you for an eternity. Get you to stab yourself in the eyes repeatedly whilst being chained to a whole host of DAOC machines :)

Mwuhahahahaha!!!

/satan off....

Fuck. Rumbled :(

Oh great I thought, all my gaming life I've waited for a really good mining sim, Manic Miner not withstanding, and now I find out you've got to fly around and shoot stuff and shit like that. :(

Think I'll give it a miss.

I think Fighting in a space sim is a chore. It usually turns into a contest of who has the best turning circle. I think the Combat in EVE will be a lot more exciting than in most first person twitch space sims.

I disagree Custy..

If the ships have different strengths and weaknesses (turning circle/speed/responsiveness/turrets/different armours/weapons) then it's great....

Not to mention the things about you (asteroids/space stations/other ships/nothing)....

Ok maybe, but i still dislike fighting in space sims. Obv there has to be some form of combat but it needs to be made more exciting, it gets so boring after a bit.

What about X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and the like? Dya not like them?

X-Wing vs Tie was great because AI's pretty much sucked and you could beat them all unless they threw like 50 at you at once.

Dogfighting vs players was dire though, like Custy said, it was just a case of turning turning turning turning turning and hopefully getting a shot off every few mins.
