The first guy to reach level 50 (the max) on US daoc (which meant he pretty much played 24/7 for 3 weeks from release) sold his account the next day for $10,000...

That's insane.

Still, 10,000 bucks for 3 weeks "work" isn't bad.

EVE "levelling" is mainly dependent on real-time, not game time.

There will be very little difference between a two characters started at around the same time, even if one is played 24/7 and the other only played a few hours/week. As characters get older in real-time then differences will certainly appear, game time slightly influences skills that are used and obviously the powergamer's character will have far more money and items, some of which will be additional (expensive) skills.

The more influential skills take a LOT of real time to learn to high levels, you wont see three-week old mega-characters in EVE, but I would envisage a three-month bargain being sold for a good price, not $10K tho.

Character money, or rather lack of it, wont actually be much of a problem either, within a short space of game launch you'll have a number of very powerful and rich corporations, who will be funnelling huge quantities of cash into wars with other corps, increasingly so as the limited territories are marked out and resources start becoming scarce.

Joining a corp will give you access to a big fat wallet and a newbie will easily be able to get a better starter ship and some additional skills without denting the corp financies too much, just as a joining present. Additionally corporations will eventually start making the trade market work, enabling easy profits for small independent traders who can spot a bargain, there will be missions as well, and experienced and rich characters can easily pay a small fortune to a newbie willing to do dirty boring work.

Also, minerals and ores deemed worthless and found in abundance in newbie systems not teeming with NPC pirates may actually become a valued commodity as rich corps need them to build big ships, another way a newbie can accelerate his finances.

Exploits wont be totally eradicated in EVE but I see little areas where they can be used to make real-world money, certainly they can give game advantages, but thats for the game developers to close up on, personally I don't care that much.

Griefers will be the main problem in EVE, right now there is tremendous opportunity for cheap kills so half the career players out there are pirates preying on the unaware innocent newbie thinking he is safe, the ineffectiveness of NPC law enforcement and the multitude of "safe" areas for outlaws make it all viable, plus the stupidly arranged travelling routes make ideal camping spots. Later on high level combat will become the preserve of corp wars, but early on people will just shoot at anyone regardless, resorting to camping and which is basically RPK'ing, the bane of greifing.

EVE has a pretty nasty death penalty, rich players will be able to shrug off and expensive ship loss, but for the newbie, especially the casual player, it can be a doomed experience. I'd hope CCP will somehow find a way of clamping down on newbie hunters as it will seriously damage the first-time appeal of the game if you spend weeks building a ship to get it blown away by a combination of griefing camper and lag.

Pre-ordered - because I have high hopes for this game :)

Sounds good. If I can get a few of my m8's into it (and away from DAOC the sad fucks) then I may give it a go....

...may have to dump the missus of 7 years first like but it seams a small price to pay for elite-stylee gaming nirvana :)

Nah - I'll dump mine for Elite 4.

Or King of Fighters 2001 when it arrives :D
