EVE online

Well I've been playing this for a few days now, and I've pre-ordered it. Basically anybody who enjoyed Elite, and likes empire building games, should enjoy playing it.

There are still lots of bugs, but the engine is very nice, lots of nice metallic surface effects, the possibilities for trade and money making are vast, and best of all you can have wars with other corporations and such.

You can even buy battleships, although they take a long time to save up for, and you can build space stations, and all sorts.

There are also many opportunities for ripping off noobs, like placing purchase orders for certain materials at well below market value, relying on noobs to not know their true value (yes I've fallen for it twice).

It's also very addictive, and the ingame music is so good I'm gonna rip it and burn it onto a cd.

Gh, it's also got a progression curve that's totally fucked up, last I checked. In that, you start off progressing really slow, and speed up exponentially as you get better ships and whatever. The ingame music is good yep, but the graphics aren't very scaleable, and it seems to slow down tons with anything more than a few ships or a station being rendered, at least for me with a 1700mhz CPU, a GF3 and 512 DDR RAM, which is quite a lot higher than their claimed minimum specifications. I played for a while when I got into the beta, but ended up getting really bored. They kept slowing down the initial progress speed over and over, until it became such a goddamn chore getting anywhere, and as far as I know still haven't addressed this.
Anyhow.
I'll buy it and play it, but I won't be playing it until I've bought it.

I didn't pay for broadband to get a 200 ping. Planetside can suck my salty balls.

May well dabble with eve however I may well not. I find it increasingly difficult to get hooked on games anymore, and with games of this type addiction is required to become one of the top players.

Hate to say it but real life is a hell of a lot better than every game on the market today :/

Eve's cack as far as I'm concerned.

I was lent a BETA account and played it for a week. In that time my characters got deleted after I'd spent an entire weekend trying to get into it. I'd FINALLY upgraded my ship and was ready to travel around and maybe even shoot some stuff having spent over 48 hours mining every sodding thing in site! That majorly pissed me off.

The game looks gorgeous and it has a shite load of scope but I think it's ultimately one for the real resource management type people.

I was a big fan of Elite (Elite Plus still is teh daddeh) but at least with that game you could play smart and be a pirate/bounty hunter (shooting missiles using you rear view and flying away from them) from the outset if you went to the right places instead of having to mine for 3 years before getting enough money for anything.

I'm surprised this game has been released in it's present state TBH cos I was playing beta just a few weeks ago and it was barely better than an alpha.

Underdogs have the original Elite plus links to Frontier / Elite Plus.

Frontier you have to pay for after a while but Elite anfd Elite Plus seem to be free.

I think Elite will still work but Frontier needs EMS memory and so far I haven't managed to get it to work on a 2000 / XP box successfully, 95/98/ME is fine though.

In fact I'm going to get Elite now as well :D

:D

Why thank you....

It seems you start with a docking computer in Elite Plus, can't say I remember it from the original....but I'm certainly not complaining.

Kind of. You pay 50cr to dock until you buy a docking computer...when it becomes free (obviously).

Ahh, that'll be why my money was disappearing as I flew in and out of Lave.

As an aside, is there an easy way of controling the crosshair on the map thingy?

Um i ping 180-200 to the US Beta servers so methinks the Euro server (that'll be in London btw) will have a rather better ping

Linkage please. Been scouring the site for some announcement regarding a Euro server but can only find rumors about it.

They would be absolutely insane not to make a Euro server, considering up to 40% of the EQ population is European. But it makes me think of the fable that the majority of Americans think that the UK is in the middle east :/

It was stated by Dave G that there will be a euro server and a Asian server for Asians/Aussies. I read it ages ago though, i'll have a scout about for the info. I know for a fact there will be a Euro server though.

Also You can also play on any server anywhere in the world with a copy of PS bought in one country. So you can play on US servers with UK bought ps and vice versa for example.

Correct :) EVE looks ok too, as I loved Elite and thought Freelancer was bollocks. Freelancer actually ANGERED me as I wanted freeform not scripted shite.

grr, gl in EVE btw.

eve is very very buggy, but thats what beta testing is all about, i suppose its cool, ive pre ordered mine. The controls is what lets the game down, freelancer controls would be much much better. How do you make money then? all i can do is to mine from asteroids......, what other ways are there?

You can set up a trade route, you can be a pirate, or you can mine.

Its best to mine for a day or two so you can get a better ship, and a half decent weapon.

Pirate > Then you prey on some noobs, steal their cargo, and sell it in unsecure systems.

Trader > Join a corp, find like-minded people, and work together

Miner > Join a corp, find people willing to share, go kill pirates and mine the good stuff

Most people start mining crappy rocks, they don't realise by right clicking an asteroid, you can find out what it is, mining Omber in the noob systems is the quickest way to make cash.

Later in the game, you can make money by manufacturing goods, you can have wars, mine planets, pretty much everything you can think of you can do. Except run brothels. Bah.

Being part of a powerful corporation sounds like a lot of fun, and I expect the game will improve as it matures.

The only problem is that it will require quite a large amount of time put into it to reach those stages. And for easily swayed people like me, it'll be difficult dedicating that much time due to all the other highly anticipated games coming out this year (hence the planetside debate.)

I'm sure it'll develop a great community as the game definately has lots of potential. They seem to have thought about the long term while creating it which is definately a good sign. A lot of games lately have been all build-up and no end game. But they have to strike the balance so that the build-up is exciting enough to make you want to continue.

The other factor is friends and community also. I'm sure many large groups of friends will start and will form the backbone of corporations. Starting up with a group of friends would make the game hugely more enjoyable and I expect people who start this way are much more likely to be in it till the bitter end.

Wow 3.5 paragraphs of pointless rubbish. But is more of a contribution than my last post I guess :)

It looks fairly good, although so did E&B.

Any one know the monthly charge?

E&B was ok, but suffered from the same fate as other MMOs it seems - riddled with exploits that weren't fixed (if at all) for months, powerlevelling, griefing, etc. I can't see EVE being any different really.

I sold my E&B account for £250 so it was vaguely profitable for me, but ultimately a waste of time/energy.

It amazes me that people will pay that much money for things like that :\
