I've just recently started this too! A mate introduced me to it recently and now I'm fully hooked on it :D

I'm getting there with it though, here's a few things I've picked up as a new-starter:

Go ingame and do the tutorials before anything else, this gives you an idea of what everything else is about.

Once you've done a few missions and are ok with the interface etc, get EVEmon and EVE EFT, the first is a skill-planner and really, really helps with getting skilled up properly and quickly. The second is for fitting ships and seeing what skills certain things require and how different equipment affects your ship :)

EVEmon will recommend this once you learn to use it properly, but its worth mentioning anyway; get learning skills! they are basicly skills that increase the speed that other skills train at, really handy and saves days/months when it comes to planning long-term characters.

Have a play about too, get a feel for how the ships fight, how the weapons work and read up as much as you can whenever you come across something you dont know.

Obviously I'm sure alot of other people will be able to add to this better, as I'm just at the end of my first week ingame :)

What Dukat said but....

While learning skills are important don't forget to keep training some career skills at the same time. You'll need the isk to flow in if you're going to by the advanced learning skills.

Hope you've got lot's of time on your hands btw ;). I had to give up 'cause I couldn't spend enough time in game.

Problem i found with eve is that, the time you spend ingame is not quite as vital as the actually offlinetime you spend (buying gametime), making the right choises from the start IE going full learning from day 1.. makes that game totaly useless to play also from day 1, so infact to be able to play eve online after 6months in pvp, you actually have to do nothing other then buying gametime.

But then again killing stuff and getting exp is a really ~~baaaad~~ initiative to keep ppl playing right eve guys? :D

Whats the order of ships? I have my starter ship and some other pile of junk which I got through a mission. I felt I needed something new so hit the market. the next ship up (at least within my price range) is some stupid pile of junk that cant even have weapons fitted and seems to serve no purpose but look better than the crap i have to fly in at the start. the next one up seems to be a massive ship costing 10's of millions of isk.

Am I missing something? do small fighter style ships exist? While I realise its a game that I need to put some hours into to get something out of I find the ship selection to be somewhat lacking. I dont want a huge ship (even at end game) I want something small.

What race you flying?

Basic order with Amarr examples would be:

Frigate - Punisher
Destroyer - Covetor
Cruiser - Maller
Battlecruiser - Harbinger
Battleship - Abaddon

You can specialise from these into T2 ships and T3

Frigate -> Assault Frigate, Intercepter, EAS, Covert Ops
Destroyer -> Interdictor
Cruiser -> Heavy Interdictor, Heavy Assault Cruiser
Battlecruiser -> Command Ship
Battleship -> Marauder, Black Ops

This is what you need to have a look at: Item Database:Ships - EVElopedia - The EVE Online Wiki

Edit: I played for over a year before flying my first battleship. Most of my skills were for Assault Frigate, Covops & HAC.

Another thought. The market is seeded by players, there might not be any ships for sale where you are looking. The main trade hub is Jita but it's crazy busy. Amarr (the system) and Rens also have everything for sale. I think you'll see more selection there.

Thanks for the link, very helpful. Getting a fair amount of isk now from missions and getting much better at targeting enemy ships. I have also worked out how to use the skills queue :)

Really enjoying it now. I am learning 1 thing at a time as it all seemed quite overwhelming at first.

People usually go from
Noobship -> Frig -> Destroyer -> Cruiser -> Battlecruiser -> Battleship

You can safely skip training for destroyers as they aren't a very useful ship class, interdictors is a very narrow (but important) role. Your best bet would be cruiser then battlecruiser (imo the most useful ship class in the game)

You can safely do level 2 missions in cruiser, level 3's in battlecruiser and level 4's in battleship. Of course there are other alternatives for making ISK. Like ninja salvaging other missioners wrecks, ninja looting / salvaging pvp wrecks in lowsec, mining, exploration etc.

Many prefer going straight to pvp even with a tiny wallet and limited skillset, Factional Warfare is pretty easy to get in to and you can have voice comms set up via EVE voice for ad-hoc gangs. In dominion expansion it will be even easier to find fleets to join aswell

I put this together for some friends.

The trick is to remember this thing.

train what YOU want too

There's lots of ways to success in eve, some ways are quicker than others but you control the journey you take. oh - don't autopilot thru low sec. It's bad mmkay? :D

First of all there are some "killer" skills. These really are must haves as without them you're limited in what you can do. Get all of them to 4 first then take some time taking each of them to 5 when you can fit them in.

Engineering
Mechanic
Electronics
Learning
Navigation
Gunnery (if you use guns) or Missile Launcher Operation (if you use missiles)
Weapons Upgrades (to 5) then Advanced Weapons Upgrades to 4
Racial Frigate 5 / Cruiser 4 / battlecruiser 4

To supplement these skills consider things like
Shield Operation (if you're caldari)
Armor Repair Systems (If you're anyone else)
Hull Upgrades (Shield Upgrades etc)

Try and get your pre-reqs for tech2 guns or missiles done (racial turret 5, motion prediction 4, sharpshooter 4, rapid firing 4) or (standard missiles 5, missile bombardment, rapid launching, warhead calefication)

Think about how fast you want to go - remember things like acceleration control, high speed manouvering, warp drive operation and evasive manuvering will all enhance the speed you travel at and also the agility of your ship. Essential for gtfoing quickly, no matter what size your ship is.

Think about Cap usage. In eve everything uses cap (barring projectile turrets & missile launchers). if you have no Cap you're going to get hurt, alot. Consider energy management skills and things like energy grid upgrades which allow you to fit items like Cap Power Relays or Power Diagnostic Systems. Just about every race needs good energy skills so check through the engineering tree, read the description and try and get skills which boost cap size and regeneration to 5 when you can.

Don't neglect learning skills. Each individual learning skill adds 1 to the attribute it's assosciated with. Try and spend some time getting all basic learning skills to 4 and then try and bump their secondary learning skills to 4 too.

Finally - Don't forget about Drones.

Drones (pick this up when you can and take it to 5)
Combat Drone Operation (see above)
Try and get heavy drone operation to 4 and consider things like Drone sharpshooting, navigation and durability.

There's alot there. Mainly because eve is such a huge game. Don't be put off by it and start small. For instance. You don't have to have any lvl 5 skills to run lvl1 missions. Find a way of fighting that suits you and focus your skills around it.

Pick small achievable targets. For instance, get Eve Fitting Tool from here EVE Online | EVE Insider | Forums

you can create a new char and link it to your ingame skills by using the api import facility which is available here:
https://myeve.eveonline.com/api

Plan your skills using evemon available here: EVEMon - BattleClinic.com - Your online community for EVE Online, Freelancer, Starfleet Command and Jumpgate Evolution.

I would start by perusing the destroyers or cruisers and picking one that you like the look of. Then search for it in evemon ships database and select it. This will give you a button allowing you to add all skills to plan. This easily let's you see how long it is before you can fly your selected ship and gives you a list of pre-req skills needed for it.

Remember. Try not to fly a ship in a mission before you have the ship skill and it's corresponding weapons trained to 4. If you do you WILL be disappointed.

Gl hf, hit me up in game if you have any questions.
