one of the reasons suicide is illegal is because in alot of cases its quite expensive. If it fails it means big healthcare bills which is a problem for welfare states and if it is successful it may involve significant clean up operations. It could also have long lasting and potentially devestating psychological impact for friends/relatives or any witenesses to the suicide.

If somebody feels the need to die because they 'can't take it anymore' then I don't see why anybody should have the right to stop them.

It's one of those stupid laws put in place by do-gooders who think that they are doing something heroic by letting a suffering person live.

.. a person I know that is close to a part of our family knew he was going to die.

He had been a soldier and later on a sports teacher.
After a chemo-therapy and laser treatment did not produce the hoped
for results he decided he was not going to do it anymore.

I have no idea about the laws here .. but I am 80% sure euthanasia is
forbidden. (had some processes and court issues in the media about it once)

Being strong enough to refuse infusions and not touching food or drink, he died after a little more than four days if memory serves me.

When people would visit him he would just look up and ask in a frail but
weakly angry voice 'Am I still here?'.

He had died by choice and I admire that. That's not a giving up but I reckon
it's hard to do, and all I ask is that when my time comes .. that I may have
a shred of courage that man posessed.

/hug shy btw :/
