Game in question: Rule of Rose.

11 November 2006 - From Parma, Vice President Frattini announces a letter to the Ministers for Internal Affairs of the 25 Member States and of Bulgaria and Romania to ask for the prohibition of the sale of the video.
"Nobody can be allowed to damage children's rights without punishment" says Franco Frattini, "the"Rule of Rose", a new video game teaching them violence, must be prohibited. This is a frightening example of how violence may become the law between children. And, he added "I want to be the spokesperson of that feeling of indignation and of the need for moral care. There should be no place in Europe for this kind of degration". Recalling that most probably, he has not on his own, nor has the EU Commission, such a power to stop the launch in Europe of this new video game, Franco Frattini refuses nevertheless to give up in his combat for children's rights and integrity. Since the beginning of his mandate he has multiplied the initiatives towards the protection of children, from the conception a wide action plan presented last July to the setting of a european phone number to help children in difficult situations.

How exactly do you damage childrens rights by releasing a video game?

Apearently the game is not being released in the US due to "lesbian and sadomasochistic undertones"...

Seems like a game that would've slipped into the night, this sort of coverage boosts sales ten fold. Wonder if they realise that.

It up the the parents to decide what their children can and cannot play and watch and listen to etc. Its not up to the EU to ban games outright so that not even adults can get them.

Stupid man apparently if he doesnt know that all power and all law rests on a violence-monopoly.

But oh well, since people want to give up their rights and be babysat by bigbrother i guess its only a matter of time before rules like this man suggest are a reality.

I would agree with this if we could be sure the parents took a proactive approach to monitoring what their children played and watched i.e. were good parents. Unfortunatley, we live in an age where an increasing amount of parents dont do this. Only today the BBC had a report saying the UK teens are the worst behaved in Europe. And the vast majority of fingers are pointing at parents (but its not 100% their fault).

I lost count the number of times parents came into GAME to by GTA:SA for their 7 year old. The game was so violent and unsuitable it was rated by the BBFC, making it illegal to sell to those under 18 - yet the parents didnt bother about this at all. Dont get me wrong, I dont believe that video games can influence kids as much as some groups claim, but when you live in a society where they are exposed to such extreme violence, sex, language and behaviour, such as in GTA, and the parents stand by and do nothing, I'm glad the government steps up!

Sure the governments should step up, by making it illegal to have children unless you can demonstrate that you are a responsible and somewhat intelligent person.

It is *always* the parents responsibility to look after their child - I, as an adult, should not have to suffer because some parents cant be arsed or are unable to raise their children properly. If i want to play violent and/or sexually explicit videogames i should be able to do that, and i should be able to find such games in the stores etc.

I know what you mean, but I think this game was intended for children rather than adults so I dont think you'll be missing anything

Intended for children with an 18 cert I don't think so

Had my eye on it since it appeared in release lists because it seemed to offer a different storyline that was interesting.

Odd - this was supposed to be released on Friday. On play.com it's now listed as sold out (was listed as release 24/11 earlier this morning) and on gameplay.com it not longer appears under a search for rose - again was there this morning cos I was about to order it.
