Gents,

Ethernet through the mains has been around for ages now, but it was shit and expensive in the beginning, but I'm wondering how good are they now?

I was just round at my mate's house and he took the plunge on a couple of cheaper ones on ebay, 85 Mbits for under £30. They seemed to work really well, good enough for streaming TV, high bit rate movie files, music etc.

Anyone got any recommendations on what to buy, what not to buy, the pitfalls, or any general advice on the system?

I was looking at - NETGEAR HDXB101 Powerline 200Mbps HD Network Starter Kit - and I noticed it said "up to 200 mpbs" (100 each way max), so does this mean that interference/noise in the mains could fuck with your speeds?

Ta.

More likely the interference you give out to the rest of the neighbourhood with piss off local armature radio fans heh.

I have 2 of these to link my PC PS3 Nas ect to my router (Switch on one end) and i have been very pleased with the purchase.

I stream Media to my ps3 and wireless was not cutting it and linking the switch with a wireless adapter was not working, it was very hit and miss. Mine have the green link light so over 100mbps connection. i have no idea of the actual speed but my web speed has always been at cap. I would make sure both the sockets you want to connect are on the same socket my house has 2 circuits for the sockets so most in my room were not on the correct circuit so did not work.

But overall easy to set up and nice and stable im glad i got them.

I've been sorely tempted by those things, but also a little put off by the rumours I heard about interference. I too am in the situation that I have wireless through out my house, but am displeased with the performance of media going from my PC to my PS/3.

Ideally I'd go through the powerline rather than have yet another cable through the house :/

I got 2 of them with my BT Vision box, dont know thier speed, and i dont know what they do to the V-Box as it has the ariel plugged in the back, but never had a problem with them

My PS3 is wireless atm, but i also have probs with the pic sticking when i'm streaming some movies, so i might wire the PS3 and see if it helps

I've got my ps3 wired up now, proper ethernet not the pwoerline stuff though, makes a huge difference. Streaming is perfect now, not stuttering on HD content.

Ive heard these are really good.

Devolo dLAN 200 AVeasy Starter Kit, up to 200 Mbp: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I think speeds depend on the quality of your wiring and the distance you are trying to go. If it's an old house with poor wiring then your speeds will be lower...

I'm sure that the ethernet to powerline thingies make a great difference regarding your signal. is there one that is perceived as the best one? I've actually seen "gigabit" ones (hella expensive mind, or about as expensive as the 85 Mbit ones when they first came out) recently, but ofc actual sync rate may be lower.

I've used power line networking for years now and it has been good although I would still prefer to run network cable around the house if I could do it or be arsed to do it.
