I bought the Netgear XAVB5501 500Mbps via Gigabit Lan Powerline AV+ 500 Adapter Kit with Power Pass-Through, cost £135.
You can get them without the power pass through for £110. ( you get 2 for that obv ).
Plugged into plug socket near router, plugged other end into a multi outlet ( because the plug sockets near my pc are upside down and it wouldn't fit the socket ).
Pressed a button for 2 seconds on the side, then went downstairs and pressed a button on the side for another 2 seconds ( syncs them to each other ), then plugged a network cable in each end and = working.
No fannying around, took me about 2 minutes.
( You can run multiple sets as well, I have 2 sets - one for upstairs where my office is, one for downstairs for the pc down thar ). No degradation of speed, and still no arsing around.
I bought the Belkin 200mbps ones last year, never looked back. Still keep the wireless switched on for the mobiles, but i'll never use wireless again for my PC. Power lines all the way.
PLN is good but the results vary depending on house wiring, recent kit has got better but I was lucky to be able to shift away from some older 200mbps PLN kit to 1Gbps cat 6 network.
I got to try similar units from my mate; ECA is right, totally fuck-up free setup and a great idea for that that need ethernet without routing cables and the pain that comes with that.
My parents needed net access in their living room, they're in their 60s and can't be arsed with wire faffing - tried these for them, worked like a charm.
You guys might be able to answer something for me.
Because my house is LOLold and has 2 single sockets upstairs and I'd quite like to run the network down to the TV in the lounge as all my media is on my NAS. So the thing I need to know is can you plug these things into gang plugs?
Given that because the plugs are in upside down so one of mine is plugged into a multi and is getting the same speed as the other one in a socket, I'd say probably yes.
I had an issue with orange homeplugs today at my cousins house, the ps3 couldn't get an ip address when the home plug connected to the router was in a 4 way, but fine when it was in the wall. Apparently surge protected circuits can interfere with it.
I was just about to say the same. That thread has no facts, just people bleating on about cable. We all know cat5 cabling is the better option, no one actually answered that guys question.
I generally only use it for the Sky HD boxes, but having said that I have had the xbox plugged into it before now and haven't noticed any perceptible lag or anything - no worse than wifi anyhow and mine are plugged into power strips rather than directly into the wall (not sure how much difference if any that makes).
With my Belkin ones, you lose so much if connected off an extension cord, they need to be plugged directly into the wall socket. Usually get a ping of 30-50 in games like Bad company 2 on the PC.
Mine are D-Link, The instructions don't really mention power strips / extension cords, although it does say not to put them on a cord with surge protection as they have their own built in. But like I said, they are only used on the Sky boxes really. They work just fine.
