Watched this tonight, after reading the books (well 1 and 2, 3rd one not out yet!) and was pretty disappointed.

The Eragon books are awesome and really enjoyed reading them, the film however was a total letdown.
Anybody else waiting with baited breath for the 3rd one?

The film just felt a lot like everything else thats been out before it, a cross between Dragon Heart and Lord of the Rings.

Not seen the books, might try and pick a copy up the weekend. Must be cheap now. (Amazon?)

Is it true he wrote them when he was 15-16?

I thought it was a bit of a generic fantasy story really. Boy becomes the chosen one to help his people bla bla...can think of a lot of similar/the same stories.

It was, well, nothing special but some points fun. The magic system and ofcourse, dragons, was a fun part.

It's worth a "peek", but nothing "must see".

Though i'll probably get the DVD if the other movies come out, just 'cause i'm a sucker for dragons, and this one showed nicely enough of them.

It was a crap film...nothing really original, same old story line. Dull characters.

Is it not safe to say that every plot and potential sub plot has already been done? You might as well not go to the movies anymore :p

There are always more plots.

Even if you are re-using a standard plotline, you could at least shuffle up the standard characters that go with that plot. Eragon has stuck PRECISELY to the "boy saves world, gets some poon, uses cool toys on the way" with all the expected characters: evil leader, mentor, fit bird, etc etc

Everything has been done, until they actually start letting the real sick bastards get away with stuff and let the film end with the good guy in a pool of his own entrails film making has been same old same old for ages.

Definitely not! There is always something new to come along...
You just want to make me look silly! :kissit:

I do not want to make you look silly :( it would not be fair to lend my weight to what you achieve so easily on your own :p

I was just trying to open up a discussion :)

Thats simply not true. I agree that there are only so many basic plotlines, but that does not stop the producers of a film from shaking things up a bit with non-standard stuff.

Refer to a brand new series called Reaper. The storlyline, at first glance, looks shit: bloke has his sould sold to the devil by his parents and he has to work for the devil doing naughty things. Basic fantasy stuff. However, the characters are fantastic, its full of comedy and relevant things.

A film is not merely the plot, it is a combination of that and many other things. That combination means that if you are imaginative enough you will never run out of material.

A thousand chimps with a thousand typewriters after a thousand years would produce shakespeare.

You'd get Eragon inside the first 5 minutes though

You can always turn things into negative.

Like Reaper;

A kid has to hunt down demons for the devil in a classic "goodie twoshoe" manner while the whole thing is ruined by moronic humor and a cheap corny lovestory.

Not saying that's how it is for me, but that's how things can be said also.

Eragon was, a visualisation of the book. Better some then none in this case. Also found it LESS corny then the lord of the rings series.

Those who find good in eragon, see it and appreciate it, those who watch it with the "critical eye", only see the "corny" parts of it.

It's a matter of taste really, the movie in itself wasn't bad.

Also, low budget on it might 'cause something.

I have to point out although the film its very simple, boy meets dragon, saves world. The books are 1000x more complex and interesting, with plenty of twists and subplots.
And yes, Eragon book 1 was first published when he was 18.
