Encryption argument

The Reg has a nice article summing up many of the reasons why giving the government access to all our electronic communication would have cock-all effect in preveting terrorism.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/21960.html

And that's without even mentioning the fact that terrorists could write their own encryption software. It's not hard.

Yeah. Good article that one - raises the point that the government wants to read our emails, not to keep tabs on terrorists.

"well, we'll just have to read all of them young man. the americans have a useful system that they will let us use [for a modest fee]. it goes without saying that they will have access to our data, after all, what are friends for? what? us access to their findings? oh, ahem, well we havn't really spoken about that yet, but I'll sure they will be nice to us."

I'm sure terrorists will send mails saying "Going to hijack plane 12345 at 19:45 on the 16th October. Me, Trevor Smith from Boston, Asif Mohammed from Karachi and my mum will be there."

if I was you people, I would download a copy of GnuPGP now, before the US makes it closed source and adds back doors to it (plus you can recompile it on any format)

Or everyone could do what I generally do. Encrypt most emails with 56bit encryption. So that with enough effort the feds could break it, only to discover that they have waisted 3 months of their CPU power.

It aint encryption that kills people, it people that kill people.

Pushing it aggressively is essentially a way of denying that it's a sub-standard tool.

^^taken from the article I linked to above.
isn't that standard marketing practice?
