First: hahahahahahaaaa Brazil 2-0 Aussies xDDDDDD
(am a New Zelander, and also proud of it)

Second: I don't fall under any one 'lable' (apart from maby ginger), and I don't think most people fall under just one either, everyone has varied tastes, and that sometimes makes them seem emo, and other times a chav etc, saying that I am this and just this is stupid.

In my opinion, belonging to a "group" or "stereotype" as some of you put it is an important step in the self-identification (lacking the correct word) and developement of a persons character; whether you hate it or love it. And "hating" stereotypes, claiming to be an individual is also a stereotype. Take a look outside the window and you´ll see thousands of people running aroud, wearing strange football shirts. It´s the same thing: they´re trying to express something (in that case their support for their team) with their clothes. You can browse through the history of mankind and you´ll find this mechanism on many many occasions. People are trying to assimilate to their group, to be part of it and to find acceptance. It can be good and it can be the source of evil (as we´ve seen some 65 years ago). Nobody is completely individual and objective.
What I`m trying to say is, that all those groups, the chavs, the emos, the goths, the punks, the no-futures.. they´re all just the result of peoples attempt to find their place in a community.

Exactly, a step. It should be outgrown too. When it comes to this I follow Sartre and Lacan. However, this doesn't mean I identify myself with either of them. I agree with them on this point, but at other points I disagree and my identity is not based on either.

What Lacan says is that at a certain stage, a child identifies itself with a word (it's name). Identifying with a word means in fact recognising you don't have an essence. The meaning of words does not come from the words themselves, but from their difference with other words.

Now, combining this with what Derrida says on the subject, you pretty much get my view. Derrida says that this 'differential definition' should be comprehended in the way of a 'mark' (la trace). This means that a word is infact nothing but a bundle of marks. Going back to Lacan: my identity is a bundle of 'marks' of other identities (and ideas, concepts, ...).

I'm sorry, I had an exam contemporary philosophy today. I hope I made any sense :).

Interesting approach, especially the role of words. Although I´m not sure that it´s really possible to completly outgrow the effect. One might be able to outgrow the rather one-dimensional early stages, but as we grow up, the systems are just getting more subtle. It´s a different level and there may be more tools to work with, but you can never be 100% individual.

Got any literature links for the Lacan and Satre stuff?
