Can someone explain the whole concept of Emo to me?

Is it something you are, or something you do? Is it classified by the music you listen to, the clothes you wear?

I was under the impression that Emo was all about self-indulgent middle class teenagers being depressed, yet the other day I was called Emo for liking Avenged Sevenfold!?

I just don't understand any of it, is it just a bunch of wankers labelling another bunch of people? Do any people out there admit to being Emo? Does anyone care?

Probably the same people who think Cradle Of Filth are a Goth band.

you've kind of got the concept correct. They have kind of developed from the wannabe goth children, but now have their own name
lots of people call others emo because they like bands like avenged sevenfold/hawthorn heights etc, punky a bit depressive..
and yes you do get people admitting to be 'an emo' the wannabe sad fuckers 'i'm like an individual!'

Huh? I'm from Canterbury!

Don't see more 'emos' here than anywhere really?

Generally, an 'emo' would be someone who listens to a particular type of music, generally relating to depression, self-hurt, suicide; in fact anything particularly emotive (hence the abbreviation). These sorts of bands wear a lot of black, tight jeans (don't know why), have long black hair over their faces (presumably an icon identified with hiding away from the world).

However, a lot of more poppy bands (such as Falloutboy lately) have been denoted as emo, even though they don't fit the same visual stereotype as the likes of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Funeral for a Friend etc...

And most act like complete c*nts. Some 'emo' bands are really talented.

Re: the Avenged Sevenfold post above - they're more a theatrical rock/metal band...not 'emo' in the slightest, really. Similarly, Panic! at the Disco (who have emo-type haircuts) don't fit the stereotypes - a unique style of music. However, sadly, they are associated with 'emo's, as a large proportion of their audience have stemmed from the same record label (Falloutboy, The Academy Is... etc).

Generally, the music is aimed at hormone-filled teenagers. Sadly it's a circle for a lot of people; lose someone close, start listening to 'emo' music, change your dress-style to fit with the music, get treated more shadily, get more depressed etc...

Myspace is another outlet for the 'emo' community. Myspace is actually a really useful tool for keeping in contact with friends, keeping track of your favourite local bands' shows etc. However, it is admittedly full of people looking very, very similar. Posing alone in their rooms, black hair covering their faces, trying desperately to be 'different' when ironically they're 'fitting in'.

At the end of the day, it's a phase in a lot of today's modern teenagers. It'll pass, just like all phases do. At least they're not just listening to the pop crap that comes out in the charts daily!

A good definition is available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_(music)

Ooh apparently I'm emo as well because I've got a myspace page!
And I'm a scene kid (whatever the fuck that is) cos I like Trivium....

So I guess that makes me something like a folk (Caravan) - rap (Cypress Hill) - metal (soulfly, machine head) prog (Pink Floyd :worthy:) throwback (Faith No More) emo (A7x) goth (Type-O Negative) scene kid (Trivium and Slipknot)!

As I said above, A7X aren't an emo band in the slightest, they would be classified somewhere within metal. They're not a goth band either. The classic/typical emo band would be Dashboard Confessional, or Thursday. Trivium is a (thrash) metal band.

Admittedly, A7X's lyrics are reminiscent of the 'emo' style, but when listened to, really don't fit the profile.

To a judgemental person, or someone not familiar with a wide range of music, any band wearing black and looking "mean" would be instantly classified as "goth" or "emo". This is, in fact, completely untrue.

They don't. Slipknot is not an "emo" band. They're a metal band, which proves my point above:

funny that, I just saw 2 kids as you had described walk past my work window with Slipknot t-shirts on :D One of them had the most shocking haircut I have ever seen. Had like a ski slope over one half of his face. Maybe he had a disfigured face, who knows!

Or perhaps having black hair and a fringe doesn't mean you like 'emo' music. People may dress similarly in several adjacent musical genres; it doesn't mean they are 'emos'. In fact, I very much doubt they are.

Emo music is all about depression, self-hurt and pain.
Metal music (well, ie Slipknot) is about anger and revenge.

So then dress sense doesnt actually have anything to do with it at all? The only sure fire way to tell if they are emo is to roll up their sleeve and look for cuts and scars on their arms?

:D

edit: Saw your edit. So music genre like Linkin Park?

On the whole, if you take 100 Slipknot fans and 100 true Dashboard Confessional "fans" and put them together, you could split them out pretty easily. Of course you'll get a few that don't follow the stereotype.

Linkin Park are most commonly referred to as a nu-metal band; they combine hip-hop and electronic music together, as well as components from metal music. Limp Bizkit and Korn are probably most known under the genre; which has since pretty much disintegrated now.

Limp Bizkit are nu-metal tho? They are angry motherfuckas, Linkin Park like to sing about love etc. Is there a division within nu-metal..if you catch my drift??

If you look up the lyrics for Duality by Slipknot you'll find they're pretty emo :p (Going by Eggy's definition ofc :worthy: )

Well, around here it is ALL about how you look (Goth, Emo, Chav etc) and that's how you get named.

Emo (usually by hair): The whole hair over eyes "Like a ski-slope" allways usually in tight jeans. - ALLWAYS black, usually listen to "My Chemical Romance" (around here)

Goth: Short or long usually a darker brown colour or natural, standard baggy (none-tight) jeans/shirt/jacket etc; tend to listen to things like Pantera, Deftones, Slayer etc.

Chav: Way they're spoken, simillar to a Emo - Usually tracksuit stuff/mass-produced and sold for 200x more than it's worth. - Tend to listen to... Well, can't name any as I don't know any =S (Crap clothes)

Normal person: (Can depend) from plain jeans to stuff like amarni. what ever hair (natural usually), what ever music (tends to be more classic stuff, Soul/Jazz/Regge etc)

Completely disagree. Limp Bizkit (also in the 'original' nu-metal genre) aren't "angry motherfuckers" at all, especially when compared to (thrash) metal bands these days. Just take a look at the lyrics behind one of their more recent tracks:

Limp Bizkit; Behind Blue Eyes said:
No one knows what its like
To feel these feelings
Like i do, and i blame you!
No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

Nu-metal music basically disentegrated as it became unpopular in the US. You won't see (m)any original-style nu-metal bands emerging.

Yep, but the way the lyrics are incorporated into the music means they really don't have the emo feeling. The band persona is there to eminate strong feelings of anger or revenge; not sonorous feelings of sadness and empathy.

Basically, the stereotype problem is that the stereotypers are those who don't know that much about the genres of modern 'rock' music. Go to a few festivals, meet lots of the fans of various bands and you'll soon work out what's what.

I mean, I wouldn't know the difference between House, Trance, Dance etc music if it hit me in the face - no clue whatsoever. I won't judge the fans of these genres because it would be unfair. I know nothing about them.

to clarify this confusing to assist Eggy:p
Slipknot, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit (omg:|) are old bands.. emo is a fairly new thing, so you'll be looking at newer bands which arnt very well known in most cases.. or they are but not amongst non emo's
