I use exim on linux - works a treat but it doesnt incorporate everything you will want out of the box. If *all* you want is SMTP and receipt of mail on your own domain then itl be fine, if you want calendars/journals/pop3/imap/etc/etc/bell/whistle then exchange or the suse openexchange are probably what you want tbh.

Note, Im not a pro, so I do not know all the alternatives etc but from my limited experience...

I admin Exchange 2000 at the moment, and it's good if you want a nice integrated mail/calendar/contacts/public folders setup.

Some of the problems I have now make me want to kill, but on the whole it's pretty easy to manage.

We use mDeamon at work here. It's not bad and if you purchase some of the extras, such as Outlook connector, then you can get a pretty good IMAP enabled server, with built-in webmail over SSL, spamassasin, virus checking and LDAP.

It's a darn sight cheaper than Exchange, but it uses a flat file system, no database backend, so I woldn't trust it with anything over 100-150 users.

Personally, if all you're looking for is simple pop/smtp then just install a linux box and use sendmail. Advantages of sendmail are, it's free. Disadvantages are, it can be a little daunting to a novice.

I admin Novell Groupwise. Lately it's been well buggy, but it's nice regardless. That is... as long as it's working, as it's a **** backing up / restoring etc.

Thats a bad thing?

Given Exchanges love of brain farts and screwing its own database Id consider it a benefit.
