ooh another little thing ive just started doing is keep a photo journal of progress (should have really done it when i very first started this but nm) and update it every month or 2 weeks or whatever, im pretty sure seeing progress youve made will encourage and also it lets you see problem areas a bit better.

Simple equation to lose weight

Energy output > Energy input

Indeed. You can say what you want about individually composed training programs and diets, but in the end, it all boils down (no pun intended) to you having to burn more calories than you stuff in every day.

Fitness nerds like some of the posters here can argue about what form of training best burns your fat etc, but if this is supposed to be a beginner's guide, keep it simple, and stick to the general tips (example):

1) Either start burning more calories, or eat less/more healthy. If you can do both, good!
2) Eat at least five times a day, not a huge lunch and a huge dinner and that's it. If you spread out the same amount of daily calories over more meals, you are going to increase your metabolism (all other factors equal).
3) Eat less fat and more fruit. Keep in mind that food with lots of fiber are always good (WASA knäckebröd ftw). As someone else said: toss out all fast food/so-called "pre-made food", they're all shit for your body. Make your own food, it's never a drawback with the ladies either if you're a wiz in the kitchens ;)
4) Drink more water and less (or preferably no) sugared soft drinks. The combination of too much sugar and no exercise is the reason behind most overweight people nowadays.
5) Be patient, it's going to take time.

Of course you can go into a lot more detail, but most people need the essentials first :p
