Elkies fitness guide: ONLY A TEST READ BOTTEM TO KNOW WHAT I MEAN

Part one: Loosing weight. Not a walk through guide stuff to do to help you loose weight.

Running: Morning better as your going to be working your body more ( you need to run for 30minutes) If you struggle then i suggest: Walk for one minute, then run for a minute and keep continuing that. When you get back have a sit think to yourself hmm this is for the best I must keep this up.

Bikeing: Bit less work than running so i suggest bikeing it for about an hour :)

With running/bikeing their are four thing:

Motivation
Confidence
No PAIN

And the most important one im going to tell you. NEVER SAY NEVER

Now running you can do this every day or every second day you want to loose weight you want to keep fit you need to do it like this.

While running try listning to music always help I listen to all types but i have my own selection of Rocky songs with me to keep me motivated. But you know thats your choice but music is one of the things that can help.
Running with a partner having someone their to motivate you keep you thinking " If he can do this I CAN" NO PAIN remember.
When running you need to have a strong mind DONT GIVE UP PUSH YOUR SELF TO THE LIMIT AS ITS GOING TO WORTH IT AT END OF THE DAY.When running it does not hurt to drink but drink water not non of that isotonic bullshit.

Never say never.

Diet: Very important although I am not an expert so i apologise for not to much detail I will mention my diet below:

Morning: Bowl if mixed fruits useally .. Bannas, strawberrys, grapes, Satsumas. Mix em together nice breakfast. REMEMBER BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY IT STARTS YOUR MOTABILISM DONT SKIP IT.

Lunch: I useally just have a sandwich chicken with salad JUST ONE SANDWICH is enough you dont need two, and ofcoure i will have fruit with it aswel.

Dinner: I eat what i want but NO take aways and shit like that be picky about what your are eating make it healthy YOU DONT NEED a large quantity of food just take your time with it, it will then fill you up and you will enjoy it more.

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINING not an uber guide its a start i need to know what people think (Yes I know my spelling is crap but dont care tbh:))

Hope it helps let me know what you think.

Some truth in what you say but it's all very individual.
eg. i can't stand running with someone. they can't keep pace, they want to talk etc :p unnecessary distraction.
My diet is not a health diet and i still have teh body :p it's all about work imho.
If you want to do something fairly easy diet wise. and cba to live like a fruitbat :p. Throw out all the microwave food and quick foods.
If it takes you longer to make you are less prone to eat when not needed.

Just my 2 cents

iirc cycling > running. Cycling can be classified as hard whereas running can be classified as medium or low (just had physiology @ biology so i've been working with ze health!). if you want to drop weight, find out how much ya spend in one day of calories etc and eat less than that, then your body will eat of its own fet depots untill your weight matches your comsuming of energy... then eat less again etc. etc.
veggies are better imo for healthy diet (eating too much fruit will give you some overdose of vital vitamins that can be damaging)

I've just started on the path to a better body :)

Cycling to work now (30m) go out for a walk at lunch time (30m-60m) cycle back home later

Breakfast : Bowl of bran flakes (or other cerial) with a glass of OJ
Lunch : I take 3 or 4 bits of fruit to much on in the day (drink one or two cups of coffee then water for the rest of the day)
Dinner : A propper balanced meal, meat and two veg

Then go out for a walk after dinner.

To be honest, it's much easier running if it's while doing something, E.g. playing soccer or something. I find it to be at least, can play for hours, while I can't get myself to run around the lakes for more than an hour tops.
But then again, I don't really need to lose any weight at the moment :)

yeh, you need to lift weights

1. Lifting weights makes you bigger
2. lifting weights build muscle
3. Muscle requires energy to move and work
4. more enrgy is burned/s
5. metabolism increases

Or something along those lines

Try and take a sandwidge with some protien in it for lunch and eat those peaces of fruit in tea break...its all about the metabolism.

honestly you can ignore the cardio in the gym and do some running though im a swimmer but the weights are very important, ive lost 2 stone since feb. and put on alot of muscle
Cardio will burn your fat yes, its vital but the gym is needed there...its a cornerstone you dont get much stronger running but doing squats deads and BPs makes you alot stronger

Regards

easiest way to loose weight is to fix your diet - 1 30 mins run = 1 class of orange juice so its minimal. dont run to loose weight but to increase your metabolism (already said i think :p)

Best piece of advice for dieting imo.

Guide is ok but fatally flawed. It lacks lying on the sofa watching Sky Sports and the diet of lard and beer.

The thread is about fitness and weight loss though it seems, not getting beefy. If you take a typical person put them in a gym and tell them to do only weights and anaerobic exercise once they get to a decent size without doing any CV exersize you see how well their normal, untrained heart pumps blood around their new beefy body. Hello Heartattack!

The best all-body exercise you can do is swimming lengths.
When I was younger my local swimming club set me stupid amounts of lengths, it kills you, but it sure as hell tones your body.

nice 1 elkie .. sound of u to take the time to help the rest of the community with getting healthy(/er).
and those talking about muscles and body building .. imo best wait for elkies guild to that or if ur a member of a gym, ask for a fitness test then get them to design a full schedule for ur work out.. they know what their talking about and u (usually) aint in risk of injuring urself coz of the work out ;)

and if u guys nd gals that are doing the fitness thing atm start getting doubtful bout it .. take a nice shower, wrap up in those comfortable (oversized) fluffy clothes and have a nice cup of tea and good sleep, you will come around :D

Sorry I'm just gonna put my 2c in the fitness slot machine...

Breakfast - most important meal of the day. Try and eat something that has some carbohydrate in it, and as much fibre as possible - this will fill you up so you don't get hungry later in the morning, AND give you slow release energy to keep you going. Bran flakes or muesli are the best for this, failing that bananas or wholemeal toast are also excellent.

If you find snacking is a problem, and feel the need to eat when you're bored, then try and find something healty to eat (i.e. fruit/veg) and just pig out on that. I find carrots and sugar snap peas are great for that. The more fruit you eat in a day, the better, and if that fruit replaces something less healthy like bread or crisps that you would have eaten, then thats eaven better.

My tip for the day - if you find your muscles get stiff and sore after excercising, then take the homeopathic remedy arnica. This can be bought in pill form from most large chemists (e.g. Boots in the UK) and is a great remedy for bruises and strained/pulled muscles.

Afraid not. Most important meal of the day yes, but if you want to lose weight, no. If you want to lose weight, go for a run after you wake up before you eat anything. This allows your body to tap into it's fat stores for energy. If you exercise at another time during the day, it'll take around 20 minutes to start getting into these supplies, using carbohydrates beforehand.

Stretch out after exercise too, cheaper and works as well i've found ;)

It depends what you eat. A good thing to do is eat something with negligible nutritional value (a carrot for example) to break the 8 hour cycle - this means that your body won't go into starvation mode and take all the possible fat from the next meal.

As for stretching, everyone is different - I find stretching doesn't affect my recovery time at all, hence me saying "if" you find yoruself stiff and sore afterwards :p

excellant tips here ive been looking at some websites and some say about how walking can atually be better for you if you walk at a good pace because some people just cant run (me being one of them, i do a kind of mincing duck thing when i try to run and fall over) also you can get further.

a few tipe ive found from my exersizzling:

wash your face with hot water b4 you work out, it opens the pores and stops you breaking in to spots.

if your going to be taking a lot of fruit, fruit juice always use alcohol free high fluride mouthwash after (asked me dentist about this because im taking a lot of juice) because this will neutralize (sp??) the acid and prevent your teeth from becoming porus and sensitive.

stretches are a god send imo i do them before and after my work out here are a few i do

stand straight legs apart and bend over and hold your ankles, also spread your legs open as wide as you can and i touch my head to the floor for a count of 15 this really is great for leg and back muscles.

one leg bent out infront and the other straight behind and hold your thigh (never ever have your knee infront of your toe though)

stand straight and raise your leg behind you and hold your ankle so your foot is touching your butt

standing still with one leg out infront with your heel on the floor and toe raised is good for quads i think they are

and arm streches bring one arm round so your elbow is infront of your face and repeat with other arm

floor:

legs spread toes pointed up and lay with your head on your knee and swap legs after a few seconds

get on all 4's and arch your back slowly up and down, theres another one where you have your legs out straight behind you and you push your top half up too this is good for back.

dont bounce when you stretch though take the position and hold it still

It's important to remember though that diets/food programs are highly individual, what works miracles for one person, may well prove disastrous for others.

On a second note, it's very important to keep the various forms of sports seperate. Cardio fitness and Weightlifting are used interchangeably in this thread, but the 'ideal' diet for these two forms differ greatly. Also, the trainingschedules for these two forms are completely different. (from a weightlifting pov for instance: Cardio will help you greatly in your quest to grow bigger, but too much cardio will have the opposite effect since your body will start using your muscle-cells as fuel)

Third note then is that pushing yourself to the very limit every day is something you really have to be careful with. Your body is not replacable and you should therefore handle it with care. 'Pushing yourself to the limits' sounds extremely tough of course, but it is in no way a sensible thing to do. You can push yourself of course, but push gently or you will eventually break down.

On a final note it's very important to be patient. Losing weight, and gaining muscles even more so, is a timeconsuming business. There are times that your progress appears to be at a complete stop, so keep this in mind and don't let it get you down :) Moreover.. going to the gym once or twice a week will never give you the hard/dry/muscular body you see in the magazines or on telly. Trust me when I tell you that these muscular people have worked for years to be where they are now. They also have followed a perfectly healthy and balanced diet (which only they can afford) and have often used supplements such as Creatine to become like this.

p.s; when re-reading this I think my story goes more for ppl that are more than 'averagely-serious' about their sport. :p

Simple equation to lose weight

Energy output > Energy input

After rowing, running is by the far the best exercise to lose weight, only problem with it is it can fuck your knees up and can also make you "podgy" round the waist.

Problem 99% of people who try to lose weight have, is they are just too fucking damn lazy and would rather moan about how fat they are whilst munching on a king size mars bar, than actually taking the time out to do anything about it. You can lose shit loads of weight just by cutting out all the crap you eat and having 3 balanced meals a day, whilst doing minimum exercise. Say, a 30 minute brisk walk a night, especially as it summer this should be easy and will make you look a lot healthier too!
