I am on an electrician course at the minute (taking the 2381 exam next week). On the course we use Metrel multi meters to take the readings (continuity, insulation etc).

I don't know if there are any sparkys on here but I do know Big G's dad is an Electrical technician, anyways I am after advice on the best Multi meter out there at the moment. My tutor says Metrel are good but they sell those at the training place so I am not sure if its sound advice or not, they (Metrel) seem a bit tempremental at the best of times. He also says Fluke are a pile of toss but Megger are good.

Any help appreciated as these bastards cost a forune.

Are you actually after an 'Installation Tester' rather than a true multimeter?

The guy is a cock, nuff said.

But my view might be swayed as I have only used the Fluke network test equipment, nothing in their electrical tester range. But bright yellow rubberised covers and can withstand a forklift truck driving over them (with a fully loaded 25KVa generator on its forks) rate highly.

a quick google of "best multimeter" seems to have loads of people raving on about fluke testers, the only downside is the high cost of them.

Fluke certainly were excellent back in the day but I'm not sure how good some of the more complex equipment is these days. A certain amount of trying to squeeze so many functions into a small box I guess. Certainly for bog standard multi meters they're top notch.

Yes I am.

My head was mashed when I did this thread, sooooooooo many tests coming up, really not confident about the 2391 :(

Passed my 2377 (PAT testing) but thats neither use nor ornament really.

I am seriously looking at Meggers at the minute.

You see I don't know about this sort of thing yet, I know Makita and Dewalt are great tools because I have had experience of them but for insulation testers I only have experience of 1 (Metrel) and the advice I get given.
