I am currently looking to buy a laptop advertised on ebay, from some guy in the Czech Republic. Being an ebay noob, im not sure what kind of things to look out for to make sure the bloke is legit, and the deal he seems to be offering is a bit too good to be true (i think). He is selling a new, unused alienware area 51m 7700, with all the bells and whistles - for 850 pounds sterling, as opposed to the several thousand pounds it would cost from alienware. The reason he says he can do this so cheaply is because he buys it in the Czech republic. I checked his ebay profile thing, has been a member since 2002 and has 100% positive feedback from around 270 people - but then i thought what if because this deal is outside ebay (he wants to use http://www.westernunion.co.uk) people wouldnt have been able to comment based on external purchases.

So, he dose seem like a nice man from the emails i have had with him, and he has given me his address and name etc.

I doubt there is anything wrong with him, i would just like to make sure! as 850 quid is alot for a student.

Thanks!

Don't do it.

Most likely someone has hijacked the account.

If something is too good to be true, then it's not true. Why would Alienware be able to sell at 1/3rd of the price just because it is Czech Republic?

I've no doubt he seems a nice guy, fraudsters often try and make themselves sound nice, it is part of the con.

I'm pretty sure that eBay themselves tell you never to deal with anyone wanting to use Western Union don't they?

I'm afraid that to go ahead would be foolish, Foolish.

Yeah looking further into it, it does seem more than a little dodgy. There are several similar (or were atleast) deals, on diffrent accounts, where the seller has used almost exactly the same language / phrases.

Bugger. Where to find a cheap laptop then? :p

Wasnt there a website (someone posted a link to it here ages ago) devoted to a similar transaction involving ebay and a laptop, whereby the buyer ended up duping the seller. Well worth a read if anyone remembers the link.

Theres a whole pile of poo surrounding Western Union transactions, as in... they never work, and you get ripped off.

You'll never see your money again, nor will you get what you ordered.

If you see something like that, use the paypal option, and again, only if the buyer offers the £500 protection thingymajig.

Don't do it. Not worth the hassel.

And while I think about it, I'm after a real cheap laptop, for non-games playing, so if you hear of anything...<nudge nudge>
