i think alot of the time schools and doctors issue the dyslexic card too easy/quickly

Not for me, my whole time at primary school they just said I was lazy, it wasn't until I met a decent English teacher who picked up on it, and got me tested, I ow him a lot for that really.

Although I have to get another bloody test for uni, because I was 15 and 8 months for my last one, and they only accept ones done when you are 16 or over, bloody lines in the sand like that piss me off so much. =(

It sounds like you had a more severe form of dyslexia to what I had, mine was mainly speech and writing, the speech problems had almost completely gone before primary school, the writing i still suffer from nowadays a little but seeing as I type most stuff its not so much of an issue.

Sounds like you went to a good school though, may I ask how long ago it was? I started highschool sometime around 1995/96 I think, I'm also out in the country, very rural area, so I guess that would affect the level of support available too.

I went to a shit school thats why they didnt pick up on it and called me stupid and lazy. it was a family friend that tested me and with out her i would have no qualifacations. because of her test even tho i failed all my gcse's my school let me in 6th form to do a gnvq the quivalent to 4 gcses and i got B's. it was only because they were scared we would take legal action because my mum had said to the school 2-3 times that she thought i might be dyslexic.

im 28 so i will have been tested 1995/1996

My 7 year old son was diagnosed by an educational psycologist as having mild dyslexia. One thing I did learn is that there are two different thoughts on what dylexia actually is. Medical profession define dyslexia as:

"a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities."

Educational Psycologists have a entirely different set of parameters. They basically state that any learning difficulties from reading, writing, comprehension, language usage.... can all be called Dyslexia. They do this because the extra eduactional teaching that is automatically now provided by schools for diagnosed Dyslexics will benefit the child. They run a series of tests and if certain things stand out they put will use the term dyslexia. Good checklist here:

Educational Psychologist

In my son's case he is a bright kid, his use of language and his language comprehension was always way above his age. But he was a slow learner with his reading. His writing was not good also. Occasional letters back to front, classic dyslexia. His maths was 2 years ahead of his age.

The Educational Psycologist basically told us that the tests given showed some areas of weakness. The extra help given by diagnosing him as dyslexic would do nothing but help him. I was not convinced of his dyslexia and thought some of it was down to lazyness. When he applies himself and tries he can do it. Problem is there is always something else he wants to be doing so he normally rushes things and makes mistakes.
