Does anyone use this keyboard layout who also has/does use QWERTY? I am probably going to be typing for the rest of my life both for a living and at home and I am interested if it is REALLY any more efficient as some claim.

I thought you were talking about Symphony No. 9 in the techie thread for a moment then.

Fuck all idea tbfh. I know qwerty was designed to slow people down so if you get used to another layout then it's potentially much faster.

edit: but WASD games are gonna be a fucker ;)

I was an arrow keys purist for ages, then all this WASD heathen nonsense corrupted me.

Its definitely faster if you can actually type properly. For most of us one or two finger typists it probably makes fuck all difference for the amount of cost and effort involved in getting a DVORAK keyboard and keeping it supported.

Will was talking about an even more efficient keymap than that. I forget it's name but it has something to do with statistics and your most often used keys are all on the middle row.
also, you can get special keyboards with blank keys, which kind of helps lots with typing blind (I type blind for example). Proper OS's let you arrange your keymap or load map files to your liking.

Indeed they do, proper people however man the fuck up and use QWERTY

tbh I've been typing QWERTY for so long I think the switchy-swatchy period would take too long while my brain breaks itself on where the hell the keys are. Will mentioned that he was actually typing something like 20% more efficiently though, which is something I suppose. Then again, the old fellow's always been a bit special :)

I can type far faster than I can write with QWERTY - I also use all my fingers for one letter or another, though admittedly it's mostly my index and middle finger on each hand that I use.

http://speedtest.aoeu.nl/ 297 CPM (59 WPM) - though that's copy based, if it is something I am writing free form, an email or document of some such it is probably much faster.

I think changing now, after 20ish years of using a QWERTY keyboard would be far too confusing.

Your score: 357 CPM (that is 71 WPM)

Much much slower than I used to be, but still :)

I don't think it'd be that arduous to change tbh. It's amazing how quick the mind remaps itself. However, I still couldn't be arsed...

Edit: According to that site:
What does AOEU stand for, in the address "speedtest.aoeu.nl"?
It doesn't stand for anything. It's for the Dvorak keyboard layout, what "ASDF" is for QWERTY keyboards. Switching from QWERTY to Dvorak is another way to improve comfort and reduce or even avoid typing induced injuries. You can do that with your existing keyboard. Learning Dvorak takes approximately 10 hours, even if you're already very familiar with QWERTY.

I spent around 6 months trying very hard to adapt to DVORAK but I knew it'd be an uphill battle, I just can't change something I've been doing for 20 odd years solid anyway. Other people seem to find switching to DVORAK reasonably easy.
I'm quite happy tapping away on good ol' fashioned qwerty still - at prime I used to hit 125wpm, probably only around 90 now :(
