dvorak is supposed to be faster in the long run, something to do with the letters being placed near other letters they are commonly associated with

It is, good luck on fidning a keyboard with the right layout though. I got a windows package for dworak at home. never bothered to use it though since I'm one of them who look at the keyboard from time to time.

I'm using a dvorak layout here.
The speedgain you'll achieve is disputable, certainly in the first few weeks/months, but eventually you'll get a bit faster than on QWERTY.
The major advantage for me though is that it's a lot better against RSI. My wrists now hurt a lot less after a full day's typing compared to when I was using QWERTY.

The disadvantage though is that all games you play are set for WSAD so you'll have to redo the keys for about all games. In DAoC the key used to initiate a command (/) is hardcoded to listen to the keyboard's scan code, meaning that I have to initiate the command with a Z for me.

Some people are able to keep both layouts up to speed, but I'm not one of them. If I type on QWERTY now, I feel like my mum, looking for every key :p

With most keyboards you can take off the keycaps. This might be a problem though with curved keyboards which have a different keyshape on the upper row than on the lower row.

(A logitech UltraX keyboard is suitable for conversion, and the OEM version isn't that expensive, if you decide to buy a keyboard specially for this :))

hmm... no idea what you're talking about but no special char is missing and all the special keys on QWERTY come in thesame combination on Dvorak. I presume that's what you're wondering :D

~ is the shift state of `
" is the shift state of '
< is the shift state of ,
> is the shift state of .
? is the shift state of /
+ is the shift state of =
etc etc... it's all thesame ;)

the shift states of 1~0 are also !@#$%^&*()
