Why Region 2?

Don't tell me you haven't got it chipped/or use a Region hack??

Anyway, I do all my Far Eastern DVD purchases from:

DVDAsian

Look under Animation in the Genres bit and not the Asian Hardcore stuff.:p

Good company.

I think he's reffering to that old cliched notion that the PS2 is "shitty" for DVD playback. Which is totally false. The playback is fine for the price and beats any VHS player hands down, which is after all, all most people require from a DVD player.

Some people are so easily pleased.

No the ps2 is plain shit, very poor dvd playback -compared to players at a much lower price.

It is poorly designed and hard to code for (thats from teh game developers), it looks like it belongs in the 80's.

It has only 2 controller ports, and Sony charge a fortune for extra's.

Its still over-pricced, if I hadnt got a discoutn I never would have bought one.

Oh yeah the only reason I did buy one is because I cant wait till gamecube/x-box and ps2 has one saving grace - a few good games.

DVD quality is fine on my TV. I hear the newest drivers are available with the offical remote control.

MY PS2 seems to play more R1 DVDs than my mates does.

False - it's exactly the same as many higher priced DVD players.

LMAO

Is it fuck!!

My Sony 336 pisses over it from a great distance. Have you seen the blocking in dark films like Matrix and Mummy??

This arguement could simply run and run - but the fact remains that the PS2 is just an easy target from critics as its primary function isn't a DVD player.

The quality is fine, obviously most players of a higher price will better it, but the advances are subtle.

Most people who want to watch DVD players aren't anal geeks who look for slight pixelation etc... they simply want a watchable experience that betters VHS, which PS2 does admirably. And ask most PS2 owners that don't go onto forums like this, if they are happy with the DVD quality and they'll say yes.

Obviously people who masturbate over facts and figures will shun the PS2 because of their ability to tell the difference between the subtle lighting and pixelation differences, but they are the minority.

Yes and I've seen players that cost the same and about £50 more than a PS2 do the same thing... so what's your point? Most DVDs don't do this on PS2 - or on these other players I mentioned. And there's the fact that most people, don't give a shit.

My point is that the PS2 is not "shit" it simply works well as a decent low-end player, that gives a much better quality to VHS and that most people can happily watch without harping on about geeky subtleties.

But surely I'm allowed if I freely admit to being a geek myself - albeit a geek who accepts that most people don't worry about geeky aspects DVD playback. ;)

Well, I do have a Homecinema system which would show up the deficiencies of the PS2 playback pretty comprehensively AND over 200 R1 DVDs.

I also have a Dolby Digital and DTS sound system including a nice subwoofer and watch lots of films at full whack. I also am a regular of 2 home cinema forums:

www.avforums.com and www.thedvdforums.com

If I won the lottery the first thing I would look for is a house with a dedicated room for my Home cinema.

It just so happens I also have been playing computer games since the days of the Spectrum and now kinda collect computer games as well as play them.

Geek? Depends how you define someone who likes Films and Games a lot really.

As for the pixellation on PS2 - it really is quite pronounced and in some ways inferior to what you would get from VHS and IMHO would spoil the fun of watching these movies.

Blimey. I've never even seen a DVD yet. I have a DVD player right here in my laptop, just never got round to using it.

Plus, if we weren't all geeks we wouldn't be posting on an Internet forum.

But you would say that, as you take the watching of your films seriously. Most people don't to that extent.

Also how noticeable the pixellation is depends to an extent on the size and clarity/quality of your TV. I'm guessing you have a double-hard TV as well. Again the average person doesn't see spending a large amount of cash on a TV as necessary.

No it doesnt, there are lots of cheap low end players that are better than a ps2.

The ps2 is shite, its a massive failure for Sony, and they know it.

This is Sony's last chance (this xmas in europe) to make some decent money out of a product they invested too much in. X-box and Gamecube will elave ps2 standing next year.

The picture quality looks great to me on PS2 DVDs (I'm no expert though.) The only problems I've noticed are lip-synching being way off on quite a few films and some (e.g. Gladiator) having frame-rate problems.

Might get a real DVD player soon.

Ch3tan, I have never seen anyone spout so much shite in my entire life.

1) The PS2 is fine for DVD's. I have a Toshiba SD-3109 DVD Player and a PS2, and tbh the differences are very very small. Edge definition is slightly better on the Tosh and the sound is more dynamic, but thats about it.

2) PS2 a massive failure? Can I have some of what you are smoking please? I personally wouldnt call selling every machine they could make at launch, selling over 7 million units after about 4 months and effectively killing off Dreamcast a "massive failure". In games terms it might not advance any genres that much, but what I've played so far has been pretty damn good.

3) "X-box and Gamecube will elave ps2 standing next year.". Wrong again. Xbox is as closed to be doomed as a console can be before release, due to the complete apathy from the Japanese market and the vast shortage of decent games, and Gamecube will satisfy the Nintendo faithful and gaming snobs (the ones who thought DC was actually a good idea). This leaves PS2 with the biggest market of all - the casual gamer. With its head start over the other two and a stronger brand name than the other two put together, PS2 is looking quite comfortable for the years ahead.

Who gives a flying f**k. This argument will go on with the next generation consoles which come after x-box and gamecube.

I have to agree with you there...my PS2 is just as good as my DVD player except that the control pads shit for fast fowarding etc :)
