So, RTS/FPS set in the EVE universe. Interesting. And I was hoping for some WoD mention.

In fact, when Dust 514 launches, the map of EVE, currently divined only by player structures owned in the PC game, will also take into account infantry successes and failures within the console game. Players in the PC MMO can "fund mercenaries and give them goals" in the console title.

A few thoughts I have about this:

Firstly, forget walking-in-stations! This is the real shit!
Secondly, I like how they are promoting interactivity between consoles and PC or Dust and Eve, but I would still expect Dust to appear on the PC at some point.
Thirdly, seeing how pretty their first person shooter looks, I have a bit more hope for the WoD MMO.

well, interact and interact, its 2 different games made for 2 different markets. you cant really land on a planet and let a ton of marines on and drop them off on another planet, or even chat to them from what i've heard...

in the end i dont think the console players will care what the PC gamers do in EvE and just do their own stuff, and vice versa..

I think they talk about it on here somewhere. As a pod pilot you can employ mercenaries to do stuff on planets for you (i.e. give them money). They describe the cash flow as uni-directional (I think that was on the Eve economy lecture):

Probably might be something that is coming.

DUST mercenary corps exist in EVE and fly their warbarges from planet to planet to attack and defend planet districts owned by EVE players. The warbarges need to be defended / escorted and equipment paid for etc.

That's exactly what you can do (except fights are currently limited to 32vs32 in the DUST prototype)

An update...
DUST 514 beta starts in April, gameplay video released at GDC

CCP has been incredibly coy about public testing for its DUST 514 MMOFPS, but last night the company revealed an upcoming April beta window in an exclusive interview with Gametrailers.

CEO Hilmar Petursson and CMO David Reid both gave the website a few interesting soundbytes as well as some long looks at DUST gameplay over the course of the eight-minute clip.

DUST isn't intended as an EVE Online replacement, nor does CCP expect huge numbers of EVE capsuleers to play the new shooter concurrently with its flying-in-space sandbox MMO. "It is really about providing this new gateway into the EVE universe for all the people who have been intrigued by it," Petursson said. "In April we'll open up the beta test we've been running since December of last year," he revealed.

Be sure to check out the full clip after the cut.[/url]

DUST 514 dev blog details vehicle roles

DUST 514 isn't at PAX this weekend, which probably explains CCP's strategic reveal of a new dev blog earlier this afternoon. We knew that the MMOFPS will boast a number of similarities to its EVE Online sibling (like the fitting screens, factions, and lore); one thing we didn't know, though, was that DUST will also repurpose vehicle hulls in a decidedly EVE-like way.

Many EVE ships share the same hull visuals despite having radically different performance envelopes and combat roles, and DUST vehicles will definitely follow that trend, according to CCP's Cmdr Wang.

DUST vehicles will also be powered by a capacitor (which should seem awfully familiar to you capsuleer types). Cap management will therefore play a vital role in the new game just as it does in the old. Finally, DUST's vehicle skill system also takes a page out of EVE's book. Today's dev blog finishes up with a look at a couple of high-level vehicle skills as well as some verbiage on module customization.Tags: cap-management, capacitor-management, ccp, ccp-games, cmdr-wang, console, dust, dust-514, dust-vehicle-customization, dust-vehicles, eve, eve-online, fps, internet-spaceships, mmofps, playstation, playstation-3, ps3, sandbox, sci-fi, shooter, vehicle-roles, vehicles

Hands on impressions...
massively.com said:

Well, my first E3 is in the books, and though I got a good look at pretty much everything, I spent most of the time looking at shooters. MMO shooters came first, of course, and there was plenty of PlanetSide 2, Defiance, and even an 8v8 lobby title called Arctic Combat to be had (more on this last in an upcoming The Firing Line).

There was also CCP's DUST 514. This is a title that I'm rooting for both because of my affinity for EVE Online and because the design document is outrageously ambitious. While my first hands-on with the game featured its share of warm fuzzy moments, it also exposed a few concerns about CCP's grab for the casuals.

If you've never sat through a demo at a game industry trade show, let me break it down for you. Most of the time it's a special client build designed specifically for that event, and most of the time you're limited to certain areas, classes, or loadouts. You can't go off the rails, so to speak, and you've usually got a dev or a PR person looking over your shoulder and rambling through a well-rehearsed spiel that is long on talking points and short on opportunities for you to interject questions about the stuff you'd really like to know.

So it was with DUST 514.

The first thing I noticed about the game was how it looks. I hate to use the word dated here, but I'm going to. Keeping in mind that this was an early build, I was still surprised at the number of errant textures and the overall low fidelity on display when compared to something like PlanetSide 2 or the latest Battlefield offering.

DUST doesn't look bad by any stretch. In fact it's got EVE's chilly sci-fi art direction down pat, but the E3 build simply wasn't as sharp as its competitors. This is doubly curious because CCP has gone on record as saying that DUST is its attempt to reach out to gamers who aren't already invested in the EVE universe, and a game that looks like it came out in 2008 probably isn't going to do the job.

301685s.jpg

Gameplay is still paramount, though, and E3 represented my first opportunity to look under the hood. The fitting screens are as fascinatingly complex as you'd expect. Yes, your dropsuit functions much as does your spaceship in EVE, and you'll need to micromanage the power grid and theorycraft your way to face-pwning awesomeness much as you do in EVE. This will take some time, too, as CCP said that a player who logs a moderate number of hours per week is looking at approximately four years' worth of training time to fully max out a character.

I also got to run around and shoot things, and I'm happy to report that DUST's heavy chaingun is quite satisfying to use. After my CCP chaperone helpfully inverted the y-axis, I mowed through a few of my fellow demo players before my barrel overheated at an inopportune moment, causing me to do my best deer-in-the-headlights impression and succumb to a barrage of enemy fire.

One thing I didn't have time to do is play around with any of DUST's vehicles. These are a huge part of the gameplay, and like personal gear, they can be destroyed and can be quite costly to replace. We'll talk some more about vehicle gameplay as CCP relaxes its beta NDA later this summer.

dust-514-e3-2012-beta-gameplay-trailer2.jpg

Where DUST stands apart from its shooter competition is in its gameplay synergy with EVE, but CCP says that at launch, this interaction will be fairly limited, as the devs plan to polish the shooter elements first and gradually expand the games' connections as DUST evolves. Taken on its own, DUST is still quite a bit different from the norm due to the ridiculous amount of character customization.

This is a double-edged sword because on the one hand, it will probably appeal to shooter fans who long for something a bit deeper and a bit more meaningful (you can lose that piece of gear you've spent days tweaking, just as you can lose your spaceship in EVE). On the other hand, if CCP is aiming for accessibility and an influx of casuals in the EVE universe, I'm not sure DUST's loadout complexity is the best way to go about it. Personally I love it, and I think EVE veterans who also like shooters will love it, but the jury's still out on console players who lack any preconceived notions of badassery.

If it sounds like I'm worried about DUST 514, well, I am, and then again, I'm not. What I mean by that is the title is already enjoyable as-is, despite its rough-around-the-edges presentation and my limited hands-on opportunities. Also, CCP is arguably the most adventurous AAA developer in the MMO space, and it is walking a very exciting path with its DUST/EVE integration plans as well as its aim to marry unheard of customization and consequence-driven gameplay with traditional shooter mechanics.

That's the EVE fan in me doing the talking, though. If I didn't already have an ongoing love affair with New Eden's sandbox, I might see DUST as yet another sci-fi shooter (albeit one with a freakishly complex loadout system and a cooler than average backstory). Ultimately I'm still excited about DUST, but I'm equally glad that it's not releasing this week if you know what I mean. Ideally the game will be around for plenty of years, and as such it will have plenty of time to evolve and mature, much like its predecessor.

DUST 514 and EVE Online 'initial integration' now playing on Singularity test server
by Jef Reahard on Aug 27th 2012 2:00PMBetas, Sci-fi, EVE Online, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Free-to-play, MMOFPS, DUST 514, Sandbox0

CCP has announced that EVE Online and DUST 514 players can now officially communicate with one another in-game on the firm's Singularity test server.

DUST mercenaries and EVE capsuleers can chat each other up in the local channels of several empire systems, according to a new CCP forum post. EVE-mail messages can also be exchanged between the two playerbases, and DUST items are now visible on EVE's in-game market (though it's currently impossible to buy them through the EVE client).

CCP says initial EVE/DUST interaction is necessarily limited due to several known issues and the age of Singularity's current code base, but today's announcement marks an exciting first step in the firm's long-range plan to merge its long-running sci-fi MMORPG with its new PlayStation 3 shooter.

Players in DUST 514 and EVE Online can join the same corporations
by Justin Olivetti on Sep 13th 2012 3:00PMSci-fi, EVE Online, Guilds, Free-to-play, MMOFPS, DUST 514

Integrating EVE Online with CCP Games' upcoming DUST 514 must present many challenges, one of which is how to handle the issue of corporations (guilds). In a new blog post, CCP confirms that players of either game can join the same corporations, whether they are newly established or deep-rooted EVE entities.

DUST 514 corps will therefore be structured and function much the same as the corps in EVE Online, with the founding member becoming CEO. DUST 514 players will not be able to access all levels of management for multi-game corps, however.

CCP is providing similar corporation creation tools for DUST 514, including logo design, structured roles, and corporation battles. Players of both games will then be easily able to communicate to each other through corp chat.

CCP merging DUST beta with EVE live server on January 10
by MJ Guthrie on Jan 8th 2013 11:00AMBetas, Sci-fi, EVE Online, Business models, Game mechanics, PvP, News items, Free-to-play, DUST 514, Sandbox0

EVE Online and DUST 514 players have been rubbing elbows on the Singularity test server for a while now. Beginning Thursday, January 10th, the two groups will be hobnobbing together for keeps on EVE's live Tranquility server.

With the two games combining, both playerbases will be able to interact via chat channels and even join corporations together. However, even though DUST is integrating into the live EVE server, CCP points out that the shooter is not officially launching. "For now we are remaining in closed beta from the DUST side of things," the company says. However, barring any major catastrophes, CCP also states this will be the last time DUST characters are reset.

The Battle for Caldari Prime is the next step for EVE Online and DUST 514 integration
by Beau Hindman on Mar 20th 2013 8:00PMBetas, Sci-fi, EVE Online, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Interviews, Previews, PvP, War, DUST 514, Sandbox0

CCP is no stranger to massive and often chaotic live events. To keep with tradition and finally illustrate just how DUST 514 console players and EVE Online pilots will interconnect, CCP will host a live event this Friday afternoon (UTC) called the Battle for Caldari Prime.

Sound cryptic? We agree! So we joined a roundtable with CCP Senior Producer Arnar Hrafn Gylfason to get the skinny on just how explosive this event will be for the greater EVE Online universe.

It turns out that something big is happening, and it will hopefully demonstrate just what an impact DUST 514 will make on the IP. We imagine a lot of explosions and plenty of drama, so read on for a little of both.

ensemble940-1363821777.jpg

Fans of the two games know that CCP is already been running the Uprising story, a lore-friendly way for DUST 514 mercs to be written into EVE Online. During DUST's beta, that storyline has consisted primarily of small, self-contained events that highlight the crossover mechanics. So far, thousands of DUST 514 players have participated alongside hundreds of EVE Online players. Now, CCP says, it's time to broaden the reach of the program beyond those core players and allow more casual players to experience the systems through events like the one coming on Friday.

The devs hope the Battle for Caldari Prime will lead to players actually helping to write the lore of the game, even though it's possible that things will not go quite as CCP plans. This is EVE we're talking about here. What does a developer do when 10,000 players show up in the hopes of destroying the event outright? The studio aims to simply earmark the timeline of the event and adjust accordingly. This creates a lot of freedom for players who want to actually shape the lore (and a lot of work for the folks at CCP who must keep up).

So what can you expect at the live event on Friday?

greenline.png

"It will be a significant event where the best mercs finally erupt as a force that can actually sway empires and help turn the tide of battle as they take over an entire planet."

greyline.png
The Battle for Caldari Prime will be a significant event during which the best mercs finally erupt as a force that can actually sway empires and help turn the tide of battle as they take over an entire planet. Meanwhile, EVE Online players will try to maintain control outside of that planet's atmosphere. CCP aims to engender gameplay that offers the chance to fire one bullet in one game and find its target the other. How this event goes down will actually have a major impact on EVE Online history not only in collective player lore but as part of the official EVE Online lore. If all goes as planned, Gylfason told me, the event will serve as the perfection demonstration of the games' interconnectivity in a more impressive way than mere dev blogs and patch notes. Expect the whole shebang to be less about individual player mechanics and more about introducing players to a new, larger universe on multiple fronts, including joined chat channels and economies.

Going forward, CCP hopes to ensure that such events are as synchronized as possible so that players can actually feel the impact of events in real time. CCP will also be livestreaming this Friday's event, complete with camera ships and commentators to explain the systems for those who are not familiar with either game (and for those of us who are simply too wimpy to duel with possible lag).

While CCP is taking precautions to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible, the studio is still warning everyone that it will be a very large event, large enough that pilots will want to show up to claim the bragging rights of having been there!

CCP Games has just announced at this weekend's EVE Fanfest that the wait for DUST 514 will soon be over: DUST 514 is launching on May 14th.

The free-to-play PlayStation 3 shooter is built to connect with CCP's sci-fi MMORPG sandbox, EVE Online; players in one game can directly influence the players in the other.

"Gamers can look forward to an ever-progressing game, built on the experience CCP has gathered over the past decade, as new features and upgrades are rolled out for years to come," declares the press release posted today. Massively published a hands-on with the game in January.

It's DUST 514's launch day, and if you've hit dirt with your face more than your combat boots, then you might need a helping hand with CCP's MMO shooter. PlayStation Universe has posted a pair of guides to help new players get off to a strong start, and since Massively cares about each and every one of you, we wanted to pass them along so that you don't end up a shallow grave on an alien world.

The first guide is a hodge-podge of beginner's tips, and the second has to do with earning much-needed skill points. "In the early days, we think it's wise to hoard ISK and SP until a time when you're ready to decide on your specialization," the author writes. "Until then, the Militia Gear is good enough."

Good luck, soldiers! If you have any DUST 514 tips or tricks that you'd like to pass along to other Massively readers, please do so in the comments.

Don't see how this will succeed to be honest, consoles just don't have the hardware to support mmo's, especially if there are large scale battles, the fps will go through the floor.
