All cartridges fire lots of little balls, the shot size you choose decides how many in each shot, EG.
Generally size 7 to 8 is used for clay pigeon, and 5 or 6 for wood pigeon etc.
I bought some of the BB size the other day for a laugh, they have double the charge and kick like a mule :D
The slugs are a specific thing, like a big sabot bullet, id love to have em personally. The interesting thing is, the slug itself is rifled, rather than the barrell of the gun.

so shotguns aren't rifled? I can see why if they fire little pellets. what's your effective range then? 5~60' or so? oh and another question: why steel and lead shot?

Lead shot is much better than steel shot, it holds its velocity longer (apparently), and lots of other things. However the powers that be insist on steel shot for wildfowling etc, because of the percieved pollution thing, rather like anglers wieghts.
Effective range of a shotgun firing no 6 or no 5 shot is probably 50 or 60 yards , which is fine by me. The trouble with rifles is they are so deadly over such long distances you need huge backdrops sometimes to shoot them.
Firing BB or buckshot I would expect the range to be a bit farther as the charge required to fire them is nearly twice as much as no.6 for example, but with only 50 or so pellets they will have spread a long way by 60 yards.
The slugs however have an effective range of at least 100 yards, which is why they are full FAC .

oh, yeah, I see what you mean with the lead thing. I hadn't realised that tbh. I used to fish once apon a time, but that was before the lead weight thing became an issue.

one last thing for my gun education :) you say that larger grains take a heavier charge? doesn't that burn up your barrels? what's the life expectance of your average shotty?

Shotguns will last a long time, a hundred years is not unheard-of at all, if you (and the next bloke, and the next bloke...) look after it :)
All the regular sizes take the same amount of powder, from 28 gr for clays sometimes to about 30 or 32 for game loads. Its only the 3" magnum loads like BB that take more. Say 50 gr or so. And they do kick some! I fired some the other day, its enough to make you step back after firing :D

TREM!! Get off that roof!!

no way Tremsy, no roofs for me :) I admit that shooting tourists sounds like a fun passtime imo it would be way cooler to just unleash my army of mutant ninja monkeys on the buggers :)

I have a shotty that's broke (I bought it in a big bag for my mum to kill burglars) so I can't get it fixed by a normal person, as it's probably got some bank robbers dabs on it. Can you fix it Throd?

Today I popped along to the Mossberg dealer, whereupon the offered me £50 for the pump action, which is a tenner more than I paid for it, so I decided to treat myself to a nice new, matt black one :) It was the effect I planned to get from the other one anyway, so here it is.

You should take full advantage of your shotgun license and buy some field guns. For some insane reason, light to medium artillery is covered by shotgun papers :D

Just that I wanted one. Clay pigeon, vermin control etc. Its not quite a police state yet, if you want one you dont really have to display a reason, its just that you have to have the appropriete security (ie safe ) and have a clean record .
In fact, I dont have a clean record, but the fact that it was all 20 years ago and that Im a good chap these days meant it was ok. You do have a visit from the police and all sorts, all in all its quite a task :)
