basically a HPB is anyone on modem or worse 120+ ping etc, LPBs are on isdn or cable or adsl and stuff. -120 pings ish.

Witha ping of 350ms I would seriously look at your modem and think of upgrading.

I run an AMD T-Bird 800 with a Diamond Supraexpress external modem.
My average ping is 150ms, but can range from 100ms to 200ms.

Anything within that range is perfectly playable. You will only lose out in straight ping fights (ie: you shoot and Cable/ADSL modemer, he shoots you at the same time or slightly after, you die) or if they are cheating.

It takes a special kind of player to play well with a ping much over 200ms.

Unfortunatley, I am not a special kind of player (well, specially shit I spose) and yse this does make me CS fodder.

I presume (not being a tech head) that all 56k V90 modems are not alike then. Could the fact that I only have a PII350 running the show have anything to do with my poorly ping?

Naa...your modem setup could do with a bit of tuning. www.lagless.com has a good guide to improving performance. It can also be affected by location and another important factor is the ISP you're using.

Are you based in the UK? Playing on BarrysWorld servers? Consider giving BarryDial a try - it's 0845 but that's the only cost and you'll get superb pings to BW servers using it.

if you've got an internal winmodem they absolutly suck for pingtimes.

Try getting the Diamond Supraexpress 56e Pro external modem for a start, they now sell in USB form and when I got mine it took 100ms of my ping just by plugging it in.

My mate runs a PII 333 with an Internal 56k hardware modem and he never pings above 230ms, normally settling at 190 - 200 ish. Like the others say, its a combination of your modem and the ISP you use not your processor.

Well in a rather worrying trend I have noticed all BW cS servers pinging way too high recently -for all. I cannot get teh magic 20 ping I get on most other servers, and on the 18 man Bw servers I sometimes get as high as 120, with modem users going 300-400.

Someone change some settings?

Ive checked 2day, and need a different modem. Im in the UK (lincs) and use BT internet. But still ping at 350.
The modem HAS to go.
