Well its sensible that they try and turn the place into another Singapore, but part of me thinks that 100 years from now that the desert and the sea will have reclaimed the lot. Impressive to look at though.

yup, couldnt agree more. which is a bit sad, but such is the way of things

its also a very odd place, only been there a few times, but with the whole pseudo western thing going on, and the odd laws, its quite an experience

Also best to have a shower at the airport and a buy a new change of clothes..... sterilized if possible. Lots of scare stories about people going out there and getting chucked in jail for having a spec of cannabis on their shoes.

True, plus none of these builders have actually built western-style buildings.

Hence why most of them leak when it rains, why large cracks develop in the walls in a couple of months, and a whole host of other problems.

I live in Dubai now though, I'm going there this March, and I have to tell you that it is indeed a crazy place.

But who cares, its one of the best places in the world to live!

H&S has gone stupid these days

My late father had some very virulent opinions about the HSE. He was a safety inspector on an oil refinery. The plant he worked at had years and years of accident-free operation, when the HSE decided to wade in; they decided the safety inspectors weren't being 'safe' enough. They used to routinely walk along the top of pipes to visually inspect for corrosion/wear through. They did this almost daily. The HSE decided they could fall off, so insisted that scaffolding was erected every time they wanted to do a line inspection. This of course meant a massive increase in cost, and a huge waste of time; and guess what? Because they couldn't inspect daily, a highly volatile line corroded through, big explosion, two people hurt. The HSE blamed plant design, but the plant was nearly 30 years old and the company had a perfectly effective system for dealing with the problem. My Dad was off the day it happened fortunately, but the instant it happened he knew exactly what had caused it because the whole inspection department had been complaining about it for months.

This all happened a good few years ago, and as far as I can see, they've only got worse.

Nonetheless, just because Dubai has shiny tower blocks and Starbucks, doesn't mean its a democracy. Scratch beneath the surface and Dubai has as much of a repressive police apparatus, and as proportionally as many Saudi-type disaffected fundamentalists as anyone else in the Arab world.
