early forms of it was around in '89 but as I'd have been 10 my mum was reluctant to let me go to raves + I was proably listning to michael Jackson like everyone else :)

then it became the ragga influenced jungle, then moved onto jump - up, art core, jazzy

then calling it Junin about 96 people stopped gle and it became drum and bass. thats when it offically came to its peak in my opinion, not musically but as a scene..

of course then came Speed Garage and 2 step both poor spin offs of drum and bass.. but as a lus from them has come breakbeat garage which is pretty good :)

its a circle of chance

Well, more specifically, the birth of DnB follows this path:

Acid House (mid-late 80s)
House/Garage (US style garage, not the contemporary (lol) 2-step shite out today)
Hardcore
** Scene splits **
Reggae Influenced hardcore
Jungle Techno
Jungle
Intelligent
<insert any of the dozen DnB styles from this point on>

It's funny, cos the way the 2-step garage scene started exactly the same way DnB did. Had the same atmosphere 4 years ago when I was mixing it. Interesting, fresh, exciting and clever records. 99.999999999% of garage records released today are utter fucking shite.

As they say, 'conveyor belt music' - written to satisfy the listener to a predefined formula, as opposed to being written as a statement or an expression of the artist

Problem with 2 Step is that the people who make it come from my area, and are all shit, I suggest placing something in the water so they can't breed, hopefully 2 step will die out with this generation

Funny you should mention Photek - I love all of his stuff, except for "Solaris". I'm also a big fan of Source Direct.

Is it so bad that I made a track with no influence? Some would call that "creativity" or "originality".

To be honest a lot of what MLT said was true L7. Your other stuff is quite impressive, but the DnB track is pretty hollow and minimalist (in a strange US detroit sort of way)

That sort of track would never get any play here in the UK, but maybe it's more to US tastes/interpretations of DnB

Naw, I'd invade GB with Ghetto Tech, not DnB.

"Freak that trick DOOWN"

Rebirth and Cubase VST. That's what I've been abusing lately.

I do have a nice amount of gear to use, I'm sometimes too lazy to turn it all on though.

I only use Cubase when I'm using Rebirth, I hate MIDI sequencing on Cubase. I normally would use Cakewalk Pro Audio 8. I hate Logic with a passion, it's stoopidly designed and takes too much configuration to get something happening. I'm not a real big fan of software synths, but Rebirth is aiight for a few things. If you want, take a look at my studio page at http://www.geocities.com/labwerx/studio.html

He's right tho, Cubase is incredibly boring to use, especially programming drum tracks, ditch 'leccy drums and use a live drummer to lay down roughly what you are looking for, edit them up, then load them into ReCycle, instantly the best way to work with beats, or in fact anything vaguely beat or groove based. Cubase really is the cuss for samples.

Cubase has an industry rep', much like many other programs in the music industry, despite being tied down to a horrible UI, and being woefully underpowered in places it shouldn't be, so Cubase can fuck right off, and take fucking pro tools with it, the cunting package.

This rant was bought to you by the words 'fuck', 'cunting' and 'cuss'

D+B is still live and well on the electronica scene, tho some ppl call it "intelligent", its more of a general influence on a lot of artists.

Lot of the tracks from Squarepusher, Autechre, early T-Power, and Aphex Twin got some very cool drum and bass tunes and if you go to some of the Warp records nights you'll hear warped drum and bass.

Cubase rools from its old Atari ST days. yip yip

Who uses Cubase for drum patterns??? For interesting drum patterns I'd much rather use my Roland R8mkII than a software sequencer... Yech.

I'mma start experimenting more with DnB... Lose the ultra compressed drums, use electronic sounds rather than "real" drum sounds, bleep and blip noises, and my own special basses courtesy of my TX81z and Sequential Multi-Trak.

Detroit and Bass... hahahahahahahahahaha

my word..

1. Dont ditch Cubase, its industry standard, its not boring and if you look closely you'll see that Steinberg actually have a large proportion of the Music Software market. If you want to get anywhere then Cubase VST is the way to go.

2. Wanna know if DnB is still around? Radio1, Fabio and Grooverider show.

nuff said.

Exactly. All the studios I've used or visit are still run on VST. More of them are willing to play with new software' toys', but the bottom dollar is CuBase

innit, I tried Cakewalk but the interface wasnt the same although it proclaims to be the best alternative to Cubase. Logic is a mission upon itself. Take a degree from MIT just to setup your workspace. With Cubase its plug it in and away yer go..

Doesn't make it the best though. The only reason it is used is because other's use it, this kind of stupid attitude is why I'm having to save up £15K to buy a Pro Tools system, despite it being klunky, inelegant, overpriced and a bastard to use; 'Everyone uses Pro Tools'. Pfft

well... I like Cakewalk's midi editing. Cubase requires too much work for midi. On the other hand, I love Cubase for audio. The biggest problem is that I need midi in order to get my audio stuff happening. Cakewalk Pro Audio 8's audio section sux. I only have 2 aux sends and for whatever reason, I have problems when using a few insert fx and 2 aux fx. With Cubase, I've had 8 audio trax running with 2 or 3 inserts on each track plus 4 aux sends going and Cubase didn't skip a beat. This might change if I get into Cakewalk's Sonar, but for now, I'm stuck. I sometimes recordd my midi stuff in CWPA and fly it over to Cubase to finish it up.
