I wanna get a program that will let me edit jpegs, bmp's and other such media format, The reason is to try and make an avatar using one of my characters, i wanna use certain things from the game but also attempt to draw other parts for comic effect.

I think Thorywn used a program to merge hoffs head onto matt hoffman's body and it looked a great job so if you read this...what did you use?

What sort of programs do my fellow FH colleagues use?

Paint.Net
Is a more advanced version of MS Paint, free and pretty easy to pick up

GIMP
Another quite nice one
its slightly more complicated to use as you have to load the initial "console", then load modules into it but is a very powerful program, also free :).

Adobe Photoshop
I tend to use this as worked paid for it,
Liscences cost about £100 to £1500 depending on the version you get, but its a professional product and has alot of features and image manipulation tools.
There are a fair few cracked version floating about aswell as offering a 30 day free trial if you only need it for a little while.

I`m using Photoshop CS at work (and private too). It´s by far the best editing and painting utility you can get. However, if you just want to copy/paste and edit a little, it´s overkill (besides you need lots of practice until you´ll get the results you want.. it´s not THAT easy).
You can get old(er) versions of Photoshop for like 40-50 Euros on Ebay. Those verions aren´t worse than the current ones, they´re just lacking some nice-to-have functions you´ll probably never use anyways. The basic options are always the same from Photoshop 5.5 to 7 or 8.

For a freeware/shareware solution, I´d recommend Paintshop Pro. You can get trial versions on the CDs of many computer magazines and the older versions are usually freeware.
PaintshopPro should have the same basic options like Photoshop, it just takes a while to get used to it. I´m using PaintshopPro only for browsing images at work, so my experiences with PSP are limited.

Hope that helps.
