Been watching it too. Quite entertaining.

Watching those piles of £50 notes that the camera pans to every now and again just makes me drool.

Didn't think I would like the new woman, her dress sense is just plain odd but by god she has a big set of bollocks. Hardfaced but very practical, everything I would imagine a good businesswoman to be.

Can't stand it, they're a bunch of cunts who have somehow managed to work out a deal that puts them in a position to easily exploit people with good business ideas but not much business experience and pass it off as an "entertainment" show.

It was a legitimate question, she was weighing up the woman's knowledge levels with regards to running a website and judging by the answer she was completely right to ask because it unearthed a potential problem. The design company owning the design and source code of the site could be a real issue for any company, she asked because she was well aware it could turn into a problem at some time in the future. It is the kind of question I would expect Peter Jones to ask and I applaud her for getting in there with it because it established her as a serious investor rather than someone trying to get their mug on the telly.

It was absolutely not a legitimate question. You don't need to know about server side web languages in order to run a web-based company.

Funny that you should mention Peter Jones, as he straight away came out and said that all of the issues brought up about the website were easy to sort out (his nice way of saying, why the fuck are we even discussing this?).

You can't see that she was testing her with regards to the operational side of the website? Peter Jones comment came way after when he was already confident in the pitch, he knew the problem could be overcome but it was still a problem regardless. It was a very worthwhile question but more importantly it put the pitcher on notice that she could not bluff her way through and expect to make this business a success. Anyone running an internet business should know the technical side to a competant level, if you do not understand it how it works yourself do you explain how it works during a pitch? She couldn't, end of story. She has a good idea, she has paid for a design that she doesn't own but the real value in the business as it stands is the domain names which Peter Jones alluded to.

Knowing what language the website was developed in has fuck all to do with operating a website. And she did say that she was free to take the site and host it on other servers, which imo was more than enough knowledge.

I look forward to your next essay.

Not true. Well, not entirely true. If I was build a site in .jsp from the ground up, then no, it wouldn't matter particularly; but if I was to build the site using say, IBM Websphere, then it damn well would matter. Its still .jsp, but a whole other issue in terms of code ownership, licenses and access to developers.

When a business person asks a question like that, its usually the platform architecture they're referring to, rather than just the programming language. I'd still expect someone who set up a web business to know what language their site was written in though, and I'd be suspicous of their overall competency if they didn't know.

Today I learned that you don't know the difference between operating something and creating something. Maybe you only drive cars that you built yourself, but I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

She's a local business woman who made millions by literally 'making sure freight lorries had much stuff on them as possible' lol

I was wondering what my response would be if I was on that show and someone quizzed me about the technology behind it;

Dragon: "I'm an expert in internet technologies, please give me some more information about your website"

Me: "Well to keep it simple I'm using Drupal with some custom-designed plugins to support the e-commerce and social media functions. It's hosted on Apache with nginx in front acting as a caching reverse proxy. The basic platform is 2 Supermicro Intel Xeon servers running Debian Linux and using Linux HA and DRBD for resilience. The backed database is PostgreSQL 9.0 with an optimized disk layout using a mixture of RAID6 and RAID10 to provide maximum performance, capacity and resilience and low cost. Long-term I'm hoping to invest in some Juniper SRX-series Security Gateway devices and Anycast our prefix to improve resilience and reduce latency."

Dragon: "Erm...what are your projected revenue figures for the next three years?"

If you can get Dave I highly recommend the Irish and Canadian versions of the show where the Dragons are funnier and the ideas are far, far stupider! :)

I have often thought it would be fun to go on there and try to get support for my media company to bring an innovative new TV reality series to market. In this series, a panel of successful entrepreneurs assess a number of possible investment opportunities after viewing a presentation made by the owner/inventor of the company/product...

It would be interesting to see how long you could keep going before they realised it was a send-up :)

Problem with dragons den;

If you were to get funding for your stuff, you could make it happen(without being ripped off) by extra work. I'd deny the "deal" every single time.

Unless i knew i was selling crap :p

in a lot of the more succesful cases they already have a good product and a lot of interest, what they need from the dragons is their contacts and cash injection to allow them to expand to meet the demand, which would take a lot longer without the £250k

(reggae reggae sauce being probably the most famous example!)

Don't forget the chocbox, without the manufacturing and retail links the Dragons had, that would have taken much longer to get to market. Probably the biggest success story, even though the sauce gets more press.

Well the point is that if these people had something solid enough that allowed them to go and get a loan from the bank, they would have.
