I am a republican, and such will not prepare for the 50th anniversary.

Does anybody else feel the same way,



(p.s. I bet this thread gets closed down because, some certain people dislike the truth)

The only thing the monarchy is good for is to promote the countries status among the "lesser" countries. basically ambassadors that take everyones money and have never worked a day in their lives.

The 'truth' as you put it, is imo that the monarchs are part of our national identity and although cost the tax payer 55mil pa apparently reinvest 95mil pa into projects, communities, charities throughout the UK (D of E scheme for example?). They also attract a huge amount of tourism, they may not hold any 'real' power in these modern times but you ask any American, "Who runs England?" and I assure you, they'll reply, "The queen, of course". I know because an American said that to me. The myth of royalty and its powers in this country is legendry and a point of wonder and fantasy for people who don't live here, if they want to come here, spend their dosh and keep businesses and thereon our economy healthier for it, I have nothing against them.

'Down with the monarchy' is just not a viable option. They do no harm imo and contrary to red-top tabloids argument do not cost us huge amounts of money for nothing in return.*

The "truth" is that most celebrations are being put off due to red tape and excessive local costs, these were not apparent in the Silver Jubilee celebrations. Many people still support the idea of a Royal Family and a Constitutional Monarchy, the concept of a bicameral governement is a long-standing tradition in this country, so to a certain extent many of the goals of a Republic have already been realised.

I have republican sympathies myself, but I respect the structure of the UK government despite the number of unelected representatives, as for the "Head of State" being unelected, I fail to see how making this position subject to universal suffrage will improve our government.

Republicans have a cause for a Republic, but for many that cause goes beyond the bounds of what we really need, and that is a strong leadership and government. The Royal Family already give us a moderately strong figurehead, so why change ?

I'd call my self a Republican, but I am not an Idealist.

I wont be celebrating either anyway, but thats my personal choice.

As Richard and Judy highlighted last night camazotz, they came to the usual ambiguous conclusion but generally said that people may well ignore the regulations and insurance etc. People aren't thinking about Jubilee celebrations this early (As they didn't in '77 according to Richy boy) but when the time came people celebrated at the last minute and enjoyed it. R&D's poll came back with 52% saying they were going to celebrate the Jubilee and old Richard reckoned nearer the time that figure will raise to around 60-70%.

Thanks everybody for your input, the main reason for this thread was to get peoples ideas and viewpionts, to use in my General Studies coursework. The view bit covers 1/4 of my coursework

No charge, I cut and pasted my response from the "Big Dummies Guide to Reality for Republicans".

As for what "celebrating" means, popping down the local for a quick one on behalf of "Her Majesty" (oooerr) is not quite the issue, my mother helped organise a street party back in 1977, in fact it covered four streets and encompassed around eight streets of residents, now THAT is called "celebrating".

Somehow I doubt the same level of celebrations will happen this year, regardless of the "red tape".

People will go out and get pissed and smoke pot and then screw the mistress, that seems to be the "royal" thing to do nowdays.

I personally won't be organising or going to any special parties. But a night out of drinking and celebration is certainly in order. I hope the general feelings of others, and atmosphere in the pubs I go to, does the occasion justice, although I fear they won't.
