Before anyone thinks im playing around or joking, i'm not.

I have always felt bad to thinking it, but I noticed almost all people with Down Syndrome look very similar.

All I know is there is one more chromasome that causes it, but it seems such an odd thing to occur.

Although that may not seem very strange, this next part baffles me.

Can a Oriental, Asian or African person get down syndrome? I have never seen an indian guy with down syndrome etc.

I really hope this has not offended anyone, it was not meant like that. I was just curious.

It's only natural to be curious, I have seen an Indian child with Down Syndrome, I can only assume that everyone, no matter their ethnicity, can get it.

i used to work in a cinema and every wednesday a black guy and a white guy, both with down syndrome, use to come in and get 2 tickets, a hot dog each and a drink each. Really saddened me that when other members of staff saw them they would all get awkward as none liked serving them. I ended up serving them every week, very pleasant chaps and would always have the same conversations everytime.

Both looked the same, apart from obviously one being black and the other white

However, apparently some of the physical appearances are more likely to occur in a person of caucasian ethnicity.

sparx, what was the convo?

Always started with one of them asking for a job because he was a cook in the home they lived in, every week was nice, i used to always say to him why do you want to work here your job sounds much better, perhaps i could come work with yout.

Then he would just tell me about his week

ive known a few people with down's and i have to say its not just the physical apperance they have in commen the other thing ive noticed about them is they are all gentle happy people...which considering what they have to live with is bloody amazing.

i really do have a total soft spot for down's syndrome people and the little kids ive met with it are just beautiful people, they are so sweet natured its unbelieveble. I think rather than feel sorry for them i am a bit envious of them, i've never seen one throw a tantrum or get violent or anything like that. i really cant see how you can be uncomfortable with them because all the people i have been around like that have been so sweet.

if anything im more uncomfortable around trendy folks, i have no way to relate to them lol they just seem alien to me.

Yes, everybody can

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development said:
Named after John Langdon Down, the first physician to identify the syndrome, Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic cause of mild to moderate mental retardation and associated medical problems and occurs in one out of 800 live births, in all races and economic groups. Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error in cell division that results in the presence of an additional third chromosome 21 or "trisomy 21."

The look should be the same on every person. Another name for the Down-Syndrome is Mongoloism, because the people who have it look a bit like Mongols (yes I know this is not a politically correct name nowadays, because the Mongols didn't really appreciate it - obviously).

A friend of mine has a beautiful girl called Rebecca, now 2 with Downs. She recommends a book called ' Expecting Adam' By Martha Beck -I know how you love your books Ezteq. Its a bit American, but paints Downs in a very positive light. I used to teach baby massage, and all the babies with Downs were an absolute joy, always smiley and they loved massage and were just so contented, like they knew something we dont.

dont see why they look any more similiar than people without down's. Its just that youre not used to look at them so its harder to distinguish their features.

Very true, my nan still swears all coloured people look the same. Not that they are, its just she cant see the differences.

That's a normal thing to say, though. I had huge problems distinguishing Asians / Africans because they simply look different from us (I think that's quite obvious :p ). It's gotten now, because we have people from everywhere at uni, but it's still not as easy as with white people =)

I believe that's partly due to most white people have been mixed with other races making them more easy to distinguish. But it's really about being together with people of varying ethnicity. All tigers may look similar, but each individual is unique in forms and patterns of their stripes but you won't notice until you get to know them. Same thing here.

Personally I've no problems at all seeing difference between people of the same ethnicity.

Yer exactly, that's what I meant =)

I guess you've been with different people longer then =) It's just about getting used to it, nothing more and nothing less =)

thats totally true, where i grew up was a teeeny little town and only had 1 black guy living there, there was a chinese takeaway and an indian takeaway but i swear i never saw any chinese or indian people and when i was a kid i could not tell one apart from the other if i saw them on TV>

When i moved to a bigger town and worked with people from all over the world i soon got used to it though i now find it hard to understand how people can not tell the difference, makes me wonder (which im sure we mucst tbh) if all white people look the same to asians/africans etc lol.

Russell I dont know if youve read much Dean Koontz but he seems to include a lot of downs syndrome characters in his books off the top of my head i can think of at least 3, i think some writers use their gift to spread the word to the readers, love the baby massage thing ... though i did picture a tiny baby doing swedish massage on someone at first lol

They can't either.

The reason one cannot tell people of another skin colour apart when not used to being around them, is that humans see the world by recognizing patterns. This feature was a great advantage in nature and we still got it.
That means that to not overwork the brain with information, the eye recognize the simplest pattern it has to recognize.
If you seldomly see asian people, it will only recognize the asain main pattern and you will not be able to tell 1 asian from another in general, thinking they all look alike, while if you are surrounded by them, simply recognizing the main pattern they all share is not sufficient, and the brain/eye starts focusing on the more details patterns to tell the various people apart.

It is the same technique the eye/brain uses to recognize people smilling, being angry, looking sad, etc. It is all about patterns.

EDIT: Oh, and screw being political correct about it. I feel very at unease when around people with down's syndrome/mental retardation. It creeps up my back and I want to run away when near them, and it is not due to almost never having seen them, as my neighbour works at a home for people with Down's Syndrome/Mental retardation and there are a few other homes for them in my home town, which means a lot of exposure to them, hell, even my public school (EDIT 2: That is, my OLD public school I went to 7-8 years ago) had 3 classes, 2 normal and 1 for the slow students (not as bad as those in the homes), and being around any of them makes it creep up my spine and want to get as far away as possible, can't stand it.
Don't agree with the "you just have to get to know them" stuff and won't pretend I do not belong in the crowd of people who avoid them at all costs. Sorry if it sounds heartless to some, but thats how I feel about it
