As people always objectify to some extent members of the opposite sex, it would be interesting to see other girls' opinions of how good they think the dove girls look, or alternatively put a bunch of dove men out there and see what the other men think of them...

I rated them as above average - none of them are particularly bad or average looking and none of them are considerably overweight, but there's other things to consider like the fact that they all have good hair, clear complexions, biggish boobs (except for the skinny one), and although a couple of them don't have honed athletic abs, they hardly have a pot belly or lardy legs or knobbly knees.

All they've done is find a bunch of attractive women and tried to generically normalise them.

Agree totally. Although none of them are stick thin, non are particularly overweight either. They're probably between normal and above average and I think the Dove campaign is slightly misleading given they're claiming to be 'girls we just dragged off the streets'.

At the end of the day it's about personal taste. Every person has different criterias to determine beauty. Dove made a photo of women that most people would view as "simply good looking". This means, that they took women without obvious skin default, cause they're making adverts for a skin beauty product. All women on the photos are generally nice looking and provide a wide range of tastes to the viewer, so that it comes down to personal choice which one you prefer.

Then again, bear in mind that the advert was not made for men, but for women, so what Naetha said is completely right. If you want to know if these are "normal" looking girls, you'd have to ask a women what she thinks about them.

There is also another thing. The wide range of different kinds of women attracts many different kinds of people to buy the product, obviously. I think it's a smart idea not to show supermodels with tons of makeup. People in general see their own default very quickly, making them think they look less good etc. etc. so if you base your adverts on making average people look naturally great, then you win more customers I think.
Most women can identify themselves with one of these models, giving them a closer relation to the product.

I'm not much into advertising science, but I'd say as man it's completely useless to debate over the Dove girls cause we're not supposed to understand =))

On a sidenote, I think the ones on the right look generally better =) But then again, can't judge someone from a photo =) Looks are also about acting. People with no or strange smiles can be as supermodel as it can be, but it still makes them look much worse =)

wrong, most female adverts are not only for women - remember men buy products for the women, some times in stupidly mounts. by picking above average, normal looking girls they make men think the product will make their ugly wife more or less one of those (just picked in from the street etc) and girls will have easier time to relate to the product. why waste 100$k dollars on a commercial for 1 group of costumers when you can catch 2, basic business logic i guess.

I think the idea of these Dove Girls, which noone really has managed to pick up, is that their basing it mainly on weight and stereotypical issues. Supermodels are usually hourglass figures with no fat and everything trimmed to perfection. These women are slightly bigger than the supermodels (minus the blonde girl) and this is shown through the thighs, bellies and upper arms.

I think the undergarments they wear also gets rid of stereotypicalness. Supermodels wear tini bikinis and revealing garments but these girls wear big bras and regular panties. This is so 'women off the street' can relate to them.

If people relate to them, people are more interested.
