I don't think HL 2 will have the impact the original had, most new games seem to be focusing on graphics and gimmicks that'll keep you occupied for maybe a few minutes. I hope there is a multi-player option that is worth playing as that is where most fun is had tbh.

Lets face it you'll more than likely buy both. I'm reserving judgement till I get my hands on the final game regarding Doom 3. I dont think Ids got a rep for story development (Quake anyone?) but hey this may be the one. For me 1/2 life looks superb. Facial animations like those have taken ages to come about and what a face. As far as for specs there seems to be a lot of NVida sponsored talk about how they are THE card for Doom and ATIs Radeon pro 9800 only managing 10 fps with the current driver set. For me Im going to upgrade as close as possible to the half life release (August?). My bet is the 3 GHz cpus will have come down a lot by then (3GHz Athlon is £260ish at overclockers at the mo.) Dunno about graphics card yet as they seem to be welding hairdriers etc on the NVidia boards. I need to see some decent benchmarking (independent) before I part with that dosh.

The HL2 engine has been written to play on the minimum specs, at least resonably well.

Half-Life 2's engine was designed to be scaleable. Valve built the engine so relatively low-end systems could run the game reasonably well. That is, the minimum specs for the game should be around a 700MHz Pentium III with a TNT graphics card. Valve designed the engine for the lowest common denominator because its close ties with the huge community of Counter-Strike players gave it the impression that a large number of the game's potential fans still have old systems. We ourselves saw the game engine running on a 2GHz Pentium 4 machine with a GeForce 4 card--nothing out of the ordinary--and it performed nicely.

This is from the preview here, so it is looking more hopeful than Doom III for running on lesser spec machines.

A similar link for the Doom 3 video would be nice too.

Bodhi's Predictions for the two games?

Well, going by the earlier games in the series, Doom 3 will piss on Half-Life 2. Mindless killing > tedium with a stroyline.

I imagine he was talking to summo then..

Oh and Doom 3 is slow paced, apparently. Doom 1/2 was hardly that, so I doubt you'll be able to compare.

Plus it's been a long while since Id have released a game that's more than just a very good engine.

Doom 1/2 were slow paced on my 486-25 :/

But still, I'd rather play slow-paced Doom than Half-Life. slow paced mindless killing > slow paced tedium with a storyline.

You *always* have to be different don't you :D

Half Life was quite simply the macdaddy. Half Life 2 will be fantastic.

Doom 3 will look amazing but will be boring as toss. Id do not know how to make fun games any more tbh :|

Some Half Life 2 vids

http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/trailers/

You'll find some Doom3 stuff around quarter of the way down

*all not watched by myself yet but will do soon probably*
Thanks, SG! Just what I was after. :)

And personally, mindless Doom 3-style killing is amusing for 10 mins, but for me Half-Life 2 will gouge out the eyes of Doom 3 and insert it's flacid penis in a dead socket, while gently rocking back and forth, giggling and tickling Doom 3's slowly cooling nipples.

Half-Life was shit.

Nuff said.

Seriously go install it and see if you can even bear to spend 30 minutes spending 30 seconds walking then 15 seconds loading then repeat ad infinatum.

*zzzzzzzzzz*

that said HL2 looks ownage.

never got the whole Half-Life thing

it was an ok game, but I was too busy playing Q2 online to really give a shit

don't see what the big fuss is

Played the *ahem* alpha version of DoomIII, and I can see it becoming something wonderful and incredibly scary

we'll be seeing the D3 VS HL2

In lack of words

yeah

"will it run on my 486"?

I am an in doubt that halflife 2 and doom 3 will be any record setting in gameplay however they are already revolutionizing game and physics engine.

with that said... For once I am feeling like we can skip this summer thingie and go directly to fall ;)

I think each game has its own target audience, although there will be many people who will buy both.

I really hope they release HL2 with DMC, so we can play online, but I have to say, that HL2 looks absolutely stunning.

The interaction between objects in HL2 is staggering.

Doom 3 hardware benchmarks

As far as for specs there seems to be a lot of NVida sponsored talk about how they are THE card for Doom and ATIs Radeon pro 9800 only managing 10 fps with the current driver set.

For detailled benchmarks testing the forthcoming NVIDIA GeForceFX 5900 Ultra (NV35) 256MB and pitting it against ATI's current best card using the current Doom 3 engine check out Anandtech .... and the NVidia card comes out on top !

!Oh The Drama!

btw framerates are here
