Something interesting i learnt whilst on a lifting and handling course this week about the reason why people at work are being made to use head sets rather than holding the phone between their ear and shoulder.

This came about when a discussion over suing the employer for not providing the correct equipment was in progress and we were saying how much cheaper is is for a boss to buy a few bits of equipment rather than get taken to court and made to pay thousands in damages. The reason head sets are now employed in almost all work places where phone calls have to be taken and date has to be written down is that in America a few years ago a woman who worked at a call center died from always holding the phone between her head and her left shoulder.

If she had alternated which shoulder she held the phone on she would have been alright but (as many of us do) she had got in the habit and it became automatic, phone rings, answer and hold between ear and left shoulder.

Because of this repeated motion she was doing it at least 100 times a day she created a weakness in the side of her neck and one day she answered the phone and bam her carotid artery on her right side blew out (a bit like a car tire when the rubber gets worn) and she literally bled to death in a few seconds whilst taking the call.

So because of this the womans family got awarded an obsene amount of money (which is a bit daft i mean who the hell would ever think of this? oh yeah alternate ears when answering the phone mkay cos your neck will expload") and now call centers have to issue head sets.

I just found this interesting tbh, we think we're so tough and smart even though practically anything can kill us lol, so um next time you find yourself over working one specific side of your body just remember this...

btw to the best of my knowledge this is a true story and has been relayed as i heard it from the HSE bloke however it could all be bollocks but he did give the name of the case i just forgot it.

can also happen if your a bitch at your hair dressers, when you sit in the chair and lean your head back into the sink to get your hair washed.

there is the possibility to cut blood flow to the brain or sever the vessels completely.

read it in some news article.
