Done to Death, but who cars?

Question for you guys.

I know lots of people say they won't pay for on-line games, but..

"Who thinks it is UnReasonable for barrysworld to ask for money to supply the service they provide?"

Just wondering really, just had a massive argument in the office about it.

I can't understand why anyone would think it was unreasonable. To pay or not is a different matter, but, their servers, their bandwidth, their right to decide.

I car!

I think it's perfectly reasonable for them to charge. It's their kit [more or less] so they call the shots.
Also ~2squid doesn't mean that you have to sell a kidney or something. Once I get my DSL I'm joining in.

Perfectly reasonable: if a good service is provided.

More interesting question: When did everybody who says "subscriptions are unreasonable" become so backward about how the world works?..... i.e. this question is _so_ boring its not funny anymore, service costs money, people want to use service, ergo people should pay to use service, the end.

Zzzzz

(P.S. - this thread is so gay it should have been started by Summo :()

I think it's reasonable, but I'm not paying for the simple fact that I don't want any of the offerings.

thanks mate, wubs you too ;)

I started it out of interest, as people in the office seemed to think that as they had payed for the game already and were paying for their ISP, why should they then pay to play the game online.

My argument was that if the company providing the server had nothing to do with the game, why shouldn't they charge.

P.S. you gonna be at I14 Mystic?

Fair enough, well, if you decide to go, I'll see you there. As for the Summo thing, I obviously misinterpreted that ;)

The thing is Barrysworld is owned by The Game Group PLC , which just happens to be where a lot of people buy their games. Shouldnt game be giving BW some of the profit from the sale of Online games? In all likely hood they probably are. So why does the subscription exist? Well TBH i can't see a measly £24 or even just £12 a year per person supporting BW on its own. I'd rather pay £10 a month for a great service than just £2 for the ye olde service. Surely everyone must release the game industry is growing and ever more people are playing online games, and even bigger and better games coming too. Will these new people join barrysworld without even knowing what the service is like, why not have a few Pub servers still open for people to try.

I don't think it's unreasonable whatsoever, in fact it filters out most of the fuckwits, leaving good players and making it easier to stop cheats. Once the majority of GSP's (mostly Jolt tbh) go subscription only, it'll work much better.

I also just noticed I'm still in kanonfodda's sig :D

Anyone that honestly thinks they should be able to receive services free of charge indefinitely because they've been free prior to this is a fucking retard.

Nuff said.

Because GAME are a company, companies exist to make money, ergo keeping BarrysWorld going for free is against the very nature of business. GAME ain't microsoft & BW isn't your copy of Internet Explorer, GAME gets no benifit out of it unless it covers its own costs/makes money, hence the charges.

Lo btw h4g0r :)

Many years ago (back in say – 1997/8) – most gamers who had a relatively new modem, would have a bandwidth of 56k and a ping of over 150.

They would play games on the internet, whilst connected through ISP’s who charged a monthly fee AND the telephone company made you pay for a local rate call for all the time you were connected as well. Game server providers often charged a fee to connect direct and use their servers too…. reasonable …

New ISP companies were sprouting up, and the monthly fee to connect soon disappeared. Gamers were paying just for the time they were online. 60p for an (off peak) hour gaming … no fee on top … such a bargain. (quarterly bills of £200+ were still common place for those who played games often, but hey – they were saving £’s every year not paying for the ‘privilege’ of being able to connect.)

Connections through these new fangled ‘free’ ISP’s weren’t too impressive, but game server providers came to the rescue as they started to launch their own free dialup connections. No monthly fee, few hops to the servers, still only a local phone call rate and a better connection (when the routers weren’t playing up) – could things get any better??.

Gamers were happy as their pings dropped to the low 140’s (WoW), those who ran the servers where happy as the telco’s gave them a few pence for every hour a gamer was connected to their number….

Time passed….All was well…

Then suddenly ..

Broadband !?!? what’s that ? … whispers …. rumours …. Pings below 60 – nah, that’s not possible …. seriously!?? ….Who, what, where, when, how much? – gimme gimme….

And so many gamers (those who could afford a couple of months worth of call charges up front) signed up in droves for the newly available digital broadband connections – pings dropped to the previously unimaginable lows. No longer paying by the minute for the games they played, a flat monthly fee to some telco saved them a fortune… excellent …

Many were still left with their slow (ish) modems, but the telco’s and ISP’s gave them an offer – a flat rate fee for a months use of the internet – no need to pay by the minute any more – those that were left jumped at the chance – everyone saved £’s and all was well…

But suddenly - 7p a day to play on Barrysworld servers – are you kidding ? I already pay almost £1 a day for my internet connection – you’re takin’ the piss surely!!!!!

And all was not well in the gaming world – things were suddenly costing way too much…

But then a lone traveler entered the dank tavern and made his way to the landlord, followed by the steely stares of the huddled clientèle. He reached into a faded leather pouch and produced two gold coins. His dark, sunken eyes looked up from their pocked face and met those of the landlord.

"Grog, " grumbled the traveler. "And keep it coming."

Slowly the conversation in the tavern began to die out. A pool of silence spilled over and reached every corner of the commonroom. Soon the only sound to be heard was the hiss and spit of grease dripping off the large joint of venison hanging over the large central fireplace. The landlord leaned forward towards the traveler and said...

The traveller pulled back his filthy hood and revealed a chrome forehead, twinkling hypnitically with LEDs. Even through the mud and grime which seemed to cover most of the visitor, writing in OCR font along the side of them could still be made out. It read "DAVEMECH 1000".

The landlord's bowels failed him...

...spewing a hot liquid mixture of lamb vindaloo, ale and several chunks of a vaguely green substance into his pants. "BU...BUT...BUT YOU'RE DEAD!!!" he cried. Falling backwards, he clawed his way backwards across the rough wooden floor until he hit the wall behind him.
"No." came the gravelly voice of the 'mech who once had crushed armies of kings and held the land to ransom. "I did not die..."

The mech stood over the cowering landlord, he raised his metal fist into the air ready to crush the life out of him. In the corner of the tavern another dark figure raised out of his chair, as he walked towards the bar his dark cloaked appearence was only ruined by the appearence of his white loafers peaking through the bottom of his robes.
