anyone else got one of these "bills" ?

I got one last week, it was pretty convincing. Recently there have been objections to Nominet (the .uk TLD registry) putting the owners name and address on whois information, I was wondering why they put expiry date on whois if all it does is encourage carpetbaggers like DRoE.

Because it's public information useful for people wanting to buy domains.

I know of someone in IRC, who was being asked to pay $10k for a domain name. They eventually brought it down, but he just waited till it expired, and bought it normally. They'd bought it for the sole purpose of getting much money out of him...

Yes, I've had one on behalf of my companies domain. Promptly phoned them up, said "what the fuck have I got this bill for, you're nothing to do with my domain, so either retract it IN WRITING or you'll have certain court papers weaving their way to you very shortly"

in pretty much the same words, minus the F's.

They did retract it over the phone (funnily enough the phone number was only a messaging company on behalf of these people, forgot the term they used, mailbox or something) : who told us to ignore it.

Thing is LOTS of people may have just paid up. In my case it was nearly 300 quid, so I wonder how many people out there DID pay up. :|
