Isn't it about time someone pointed out to children and their parents alike that dogs are natural predators and if you're going to poke it, prod it and flick it's left testicle with a damp teatowel, you will soon find pain?

Fed up with endless headlines of "Dog Attack" and "Put These Monsters Down". You're statistically as likely to be attacked by a slightly horny yorkshire terrier as you are a 4 foot high and wide rotty or pitbull. A dog's a dog. Trained or not.

Bunch of whinging shits in the news :|

Been attacked by dogs twice, the first time I was quite obviously goading it (we were looking after a friends dog and I was 10, go figure), it split my lip but I sure as hell never pissed it off again and after that it was sweet as pie with me. That was a poodle.

The second time however I was riding my bike down the street when this Alsation owned by the local retirement home just came pelting down the road, scaring the living crap out of me and keeping me holed up while it snarled, growled and barked. They don't so much walk it as turn it loose on the street until it decides to return. Balls if I did a damn thing to provoke that.

So it's a bit of both quite frankly, dogs can be both vicious and extremely protective but I do believe certain breeds have the capacity to be more naturally aggressive than others. It doesn't help having idiots for owners who encourage them to be so bloody aggressive.

Are you sure the Alsatian was being hostile? Friendly "HELLO THERE I'M A DOG AND I LIKE TO BE NOISY" barks can very often be mistaken for "grr I want to eat your legs" barks. If in doubt, look at the back end, if the tails wagging then in the vast majority of cases they're just excited and jolly.

Right, a breed bred for fighting is just a dog, like if you get a marine and a preppy and get someone to slap them both the results are going to be the same?

On the same page, Kryt. I'm sick of seeing so an so has been attacked by said dog, they must of done something for the dog to attack. (unless it was trained to attack on site)
My friend had a gorgeous Rottweiler named Tara, had a lovely tempremant, never put foot a wrong, brilliant with kids. But it had to be put down, due to some dickheads who provoked her and forced her to defend herself (i.e, bit one of the twat's arm) wasn't any real damage but once someone hears of a dog attack, they immediately want it put down.
Sad tbh. :(

Friendly enough to snap and scare the living daylights out of me yes.

There's many times it didn't do a damn thing, i've seen it in the streets many times but that's the one that really sticks out. Oh, that and the time a cocker spaniel was yapping at it from across the road and it quite happily trotted across a busy road to show it what for. That was quite funny :)

End of the day a dog is a dog. It's a predator - whether its a fluffy poodle or a battle hardened pitbull. They were originally wild animals and however they've been bred for however long - it's not going to take much for them to fall back on natural instincts to defend itself.

I'm a huge dog lover. Like Fozzyson, a good friend of mine has a HUGE rottweiler. Paws as big as my arsecheeks, and I've a fair size arse. I've known it since a pup - lovely animal, and hasn't set a foot wrong.

Remember going to see them as they were doing up an old house once. No answer at the door, so I walked in and went to bottom of the stairs and shouted Hello.

All of a sudden, this VERY loud "badoom... badoom.. BADOOM... BADOOM BADOOM BDOM BDOM BDOM - then this HUGE mutt appears at the top of the stairs and HURLS itself on me - licking me to death! Lovely animal. But if, at the moment where it had both its paws on my shoulders and salivating manically over my favourite shirt, I had taking it upon myself to punch his nutsack - I'd expect to lose my face, no two ways about it.

Why not go tell all the parents of the small children and babies killed each year that they are just whiners?. No matter how nice yours/friends dogs are the fact is the number of unprovoked dog attacks is increasing fast. Ofc imo the problem more lies with the attitude of the owners who think its fun to make there dogs into nasty fighting dogs and parade them around as trophys. As long as these idiots alowed to keep getting dogs, making them aggresive then just letting em run riot then every one runs risk of eventually having these dog types banned.

My sister's friend owns a Staffy. Docile as anything, a real family pet. However, when walking her dog a wannabe tough guy with his weapon on a leash decided to let the weapon off the leash, so he could watch it tear up and attack her dog. A dog is not just a dog, in the same ways humans are not just humans, but a product of their environment, of mental inbalances or equilibrium, of the way they are raised. Dogs trained to be aggressive to humans are not safe to have in any environment, and the danger with pits is that the willingness to fight to the death is a trait selectively bred into them, combined with their amazing strength and physique geared towards violence.

cats are predators too, i've been attacked by more cats than dogs. Dogs tend to back down quicker if you fight back or show your the boss. Cats are evil.

I grew up on a farm btw and one of our dogs wasnt all that nice, due to the fact it was a working dog

Perhaps its not so much the fact that most of us are fed up hearing about it - perhaps its the mock suprise that we are lumbered with every time it happens and every time it will happen - rather as if it is an unlikely thing to happen.

I'd disagree that a "dog isnt just a dog" like a human isnt just a human - a human in the same right will fall back to natural instincts to defend itself by any means necessary. We have a word for that, manslaughter.

What I mean is, as sad as it is, people SHOULD take more care (parents, people and owners alike) and it shouldn't be paraded around like its a problem with certain dogs. Because it isn't.

You seem to not understand the situation , you really think the attacks are the faults of the children and parents and not the VERY dangerous aggresive dogs who do not have a moral code so will not hesitate to kill a child?

A attacking dog either has A: Mental illness. B: Bad trainer.

"predator" instincts have nothing to do with it.

It's the trainers fault simple and fact.

Instincts have everything to do with it.

I've more of an understanding than most people have, I'll guarantee that :D
Any animal when attacked (or when it feels threatened, same thing in their eyes) will take steps to defend itself if equipped to do so. Dogs, like many others are.

Dangle a red flag in front of a bull for half an hour and it'll do bugger all. Jab it up the arse with a red hot poker and it'll soon try and gauge your scrotum as quickly as possible.

Yes there are very dangerous dogs. Theres also dangerous forum users - most of them have their RPG stats and characters in their signature ;)

I don't understand some of the thinking in this thread. Kryt, you seem to be saying that ALL dogs ONLY attacked when provoked and it's entirely the fault of the person who got killed/maimed. How on earth can you say this?

I've got two cats. Raised exactly the same and they could have more different personalities. One sleeps in the same bed as us the other I barely see more than once a fortnight. These (dogs, cats etc) are wild animals that despite the way they are raised, are capable of doing whatever the hell they like.

I don't think that dogs that attack people should instantly be put down regardlesss of the circumstances. What I think is that dogs classed as dangerous should have stricter controls and owners should be made to keep them in specific conditions. Muzzles in public etc is a step in the right direction.

Just because an animal is thought of as domesticated, doesn't mean it's safe.

Most of the time it's fine to go diving with sharks, even great whites if you've got your wits about you. It still doesn't mean it's a smart idea.

On this specific case, is it not true the dog had complaints against it before? It had a history yet this twat of an owner let it play with his neice.

An ex of mine owned a huge alsation. Soppiest bugger in the world, wouldn't intentionally hurt a fly. Doesn't mean it couldn't or wouldn't. For this fact it was kept on a muzzle when out in public and was shut away when any guests came over until they were used to the dog. It wasn't allowed anywhere near small children. It's just common sense.

I'm rambling now but basically, look at the history of a particular animal, more specifically it's breed and treat it accordingly. Don't let an animal historically bred for fighting and ripping flesh near children. They can and will attack unprovoked.

Dogs are no different than people, some are more prone to aggressive tendencies than others but in reality dog attacks are rare and lethal ones are even rarer.

i reckon the dog is either naturally friendly and only agressive when it thinks it should be, or naturally aggresive and only friendly when it thinks it should be.

i had a rotweiler who was always, always friendly. i was about 4 yrs old and owned it from being a puppy. he was basically like my little minion and he was fine with people unless they touched him. i remember i told one lad, dont touch him or he will bite. so what did the dumb fuck do? touched him, and my dog happily bit the hell out of his arm.
is that the dogs fault or the dumb fucks fault?

on the other hand ive also been chased down by dogs for no apparent reason and its these dogs i would class as naturally agressive.

my dog never did anything like that, unless you touched him. i think thats a fair deal.

but on the subject of cool dogs, i also owned a little yorkie who i trained to switch the TV channels over :).

In the current case the dog was the guard dog of a convicted drug dealer - it was of a breed outlawed as being too vicious to be kept in this country - it had been trained to be vicious - it had a history of being vicious - it was vicious - a girl died.

The owner was an criminal idiot - theres no way to legislate for criminal idiots - I dont think this case can be used as the basis of any general point.

I'm not having an us v them anything Rynnor - I was having a personal dig at something I don't like and a particular sort of person involved with that sort of thing. I'm also a bit fed up of people bitching about me bitching about that ;) Quite simply, if you don't like it, fuck off :D

Kenny - I wasn't saying that at all mate - at least not intentionally. I'm aware dogs like other animals are capable of doing anything they like and believe it or not I agree with the common sense rulings that you pointed out - voluntary muzzling etc - no distress to the dog or the people flicking it's nads ;)

The point I am TRYING to get across is that it's pointless for people like the BBC and similar media sources to put the blame square on the animal. It doesn't know wrong from right - you can train a dog to kill or hunt - but can you actually train one NOT to hurt? Not sure on that one.

It's a debate that could probably go on for years. I'd personally support voluntary muzzling. I wouldn't support the banning or higher control of entire breeds just because of the temperament of a few.

You can't trust any dog, of any breed. Given the right circumstances any dog is dangerous. I would say that the majority of dog attacks are down to irresponsible care (probably not intentionally), but no trainer is able to make a dog 100 per cent safe.
What you have to remember is they're barely tamed stupid animals, they can react instinctively for reasons that, generally, people will misunderstand (they will instinctively chase for example, it's not necessarily aggressive but a game - it's up to the owner to sort this out).
I don't think the breed of the dog is the main issue, but the type of person that keeps them. There is a demonisation of certain breeds that seems to ignore the idiots responsible. In fact, I believe Pitbulls have a tendency for being very friendly towards people, it's training (that can be applied to any breed) that results in aggressiveness towards humans.

At the end of the day, a dog is a dog. I own an alsation, she has never bitten anyone in all her 10 years of life, but if she caught you climbing over my fence you would regret it , no doubt about that. I know the potential she has for a bit of unpleasantness, so whenever I see someone coming towards me when Im walking her, I put her on the lead. I know she 95% wont bite the person, but thats not enough is it? Its common decency thats all. A big dog is like a loaded gun, and I wont point one of them at you either (probably :) )
The bull terrier type dogs, and the current trend for mastifs, are often owned by people that know fuck all about dogs, probably wont own the dog for its lifetime, and have only got it to look hard anyway. I hate those people , I must admit.
Having said all that, the media love something to latch onto. They are the pits of the earth these days. Not 12 months ago there was an airgun attack in the news every other day, now its a dog attack. You have to remember theres 58m people in this country, probably 59m by the time Ive finished this post :) Theres bound to be something going off somewhere, to someone. Its the law of avarages, The media just like to promote a certain cause to sell papers/ watch shows.

All true - its also best to note that early January is a slow news period - unless some obliging natural disaster comes along theres basically very little happening - in desperation they shower coverage on stories they either wouldnt normally touch or would just do a few lines on.

As Throd said you can now expect a shower of dog attack stories getting attention...

Your missing the point that its idiots who are causing the problem - responsible dog owners are not the problem and never have been - the idiots who are unfit to own a dog and have no idea how to control it are not going to voluntarily muzzle it either so you'd just be creating more hassle for the law abiding owners.

Its like when they outlawed people owning pistols - criminals ignored the law so the only people who were affected were law abiding citizens.

The fact is that existing laws cover these situations - they just require enforcement.

Well said. This government, and this whole country, has become obsessed with rediculous unenforcable laws just to make them selves look like they're doing something.
