I am this guys house that I go and see for my job, helping him with computer stuff. Anyway, he's somehow got the menu at the top of Word to display 'File' twice and I can't figure out how to get rid of one of them.

I'm sure this should go somewhere else but I'm only here for two hours and thought I might get a quicker response in here. :)

to reset the menu to default settings:

close word
do a search on his PC for normal.dot
delete it
load word again
should have a normal menu bar at the top then.

customize the toolbar to make sure that there arn't 2 FILE's in there, and/or reset the toolbar.

start word with asome switches
eg winword.exe /a

/a Starts Word and prevents add-ins and global templates (including the Normal template) from being loaded automatically.

The /a switch also locks the setting files; that is, the setting files cannot be read or modified if you use this switch.
/laddinpath Starts Word and then loads a specific Word add-in.
/m Starts a new instance of Word without running any AutoExec macros.
/mmacroname Starts Word and then runs a specific macro. The /m switch also prevents Word from running any AutoExec macros.
/n Starts a new instance of Word with no document open. Documents opened in each instance of Word will not appear as choices in the Window menu of other instances.
/ttemplatename Starts Word with a new document based on a template other than the Normal template.
/w Starts a new instance of Word with a blank document. Documents opened in each instance of Word will not appear as choices in the Window menu of the other instances.
(no switch) A new Word window is opened with a blank document using the existing instance of the Word program.

Tools --> Customise --> Commands.

Remove one of the "files" from the left hand box.

Can't find normal.dot with a search, no results.

I already tried Tools --> Customise --> Commands - theres only one occurrance of files in there and no option to remove it anyway.

I could try what Brooky says but sounds a bit complicated. :)

Edit: I did try Brooky's way , which gets rid of the two files, but don't see how to fix it for normal use.

assuming windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot

for some reason, I can't find it either with a file search :S

Uninstall word.

Use something that doesnt suck, or at the very least sucks less.

We can see all the other folders in there, just not that one; it doesn't really matter that much, everything still works, just bugs him that there's two 'files' on the menu. :)

change the shortcut to for word so that it has the switch at the end of it, after the quotation marks eg "c:\program files\microsoft iffice\office 10\winword.exe" /a

Does a program like that exist? And don't pretend Open Office sucks less than MS Office :)

Think I'll probably just reinstall it when I go again tomorrow; that's how I usually fix a lot of stuff for him anyway, he's always botching stuff up and deleting important operating files - he can't speak and his memory is a bit poor so he can never tell me what he did to cause problems in the first place, so I just have to guess most of the time.

Anyway I don't see why Word sucks, I've been using it for years and it just seems like a normal word processing program to me, never had any problems with it myself. :)

Just did this now btw, after changing file view options, and it's fixed, so cheers. :)

Better change those options back now....
