i dont think im particularly cultured. to be cultured to me means being aware of different cultures and things. and since i havent really gone to places with massively different cultures from ours (read: UK), i dont consider myself 'cultured' but i've read a fair bit, i've been to uni, i can speak 2 other languages (not fluently, but getting there) and some people might say that is being cultured. the definition is "enlightened".
what some people take cultured to mean is listening to mozart, only eating caviar, and quoting shakespeare. but thats not true.
there isnt an answer that suits me. apart from, i like gary the snail just as much as the next guy.

Interesting question! And impossible to answer, because it´s so complex. To me, it´s a combination of things. Manners are one of them. They´re absolutely irrelevant most of the time, but it´s important to have them when it counts.
Knowledge... it´s not important to be familiar with contemporary artists. But general education, knowing Dali, Bach, Shakespeare etc. and at least have a vague idea of what they have done is definitely a plus. (And you´re right, haarewin, listening to Mozart or quoting Shakespeare doesn´t make you cultured. Having heard of them does. :)).
Finally, the ability to control your temper is an important thing. Winning discussions with words and arguments instead of going tilt and resorting to insults.

I thought you meant well travelled, been around the (world) block a few times etc etc... if it's simply a case of doing intellectual type stuff (as someonelse suggested), It'd be a different story...

actually imo its a mix of both.
appreciating art (which involves music etc)
experiencing different ways of living
being knowledgable, but not necessarily educated
having hobbies which dont only involve getting pissed

etc

Listening to roger waters at the moment :D

Well in general I listen to a mixed bag of stuff ranging from pink floyd to pantera; basically if it's good music, I'll listen to it.

Erm, well I'm writing a book at the moment, play instruments, appreciate art, and am generally open minded to anything which interests me. On the other hand, I haven't even been out of the country in years...

Is this considered cultered? I never have really got the whole concept really, I thought it was just a case of being well travelled even if you aren't a posh git.

rofl i actaully did a painting combining scenes from wind in the willows (including that exact same pic of Mr Toad) and scenes from the house on pooh corner as illustrated by E.H Sheppard for my mother in law for christmas!

I'd say I am, I enjoy a whole bunch of different things, wide ranges of music, art, hobbies etc and can converse easily with people no matter their back ground/age etc.

However the socalising thing is pretty much a front as I only do it for work...when left to my own devices I pretty much avoid human contact (or it pretty much avoids me).

I enjoy improving myself, learning new skills, whether they are "useful" or just for fun, I can't understand (though this does not mean I condemn them) people who refuse to learn or try new things and think that certain things are above (or beneath) them just because of their upbringing, I'll go to a shakespeare production one day then go out in my wellies tadpoleing the next.

What you mean by Cultured?

Exactly

To some it might mean well-travelled, well-read, appreciates the arts (ballet, classical music, opera, theatre, fine paintings, poetry, 16th century French literature, good wine), well-mannered, polite, dignified, plays a music instrument (not electric guitar) and so on.

To some it might mean being a pompous know-it-all

To others cultured might mean you read a broadsheet newspaper

Some might considered cultured if they don't like football

Some might be cultured if they can use a knife and fork and eat meals at a table rather than on their lap whilst watching TV
