Sadly yes, the people fighting this reform are middle class and white, those are the people this taxes most and benefits least. The money will be spent on giving tens of millions of poor black people access to basic medical cover instead of just letting the poor bastards die because they can't afford treatment which is what currently happens. Where is the racism? Alot of those white middle class people don't want their tax dollars spent helping black people live longer.

The entire republican side crying about wanting their country back is hilariously racist.
Large swathes of them didn't "Really" believe they'd let a black man be president so there wasn't quite as much fuss before the election... but the "socialism" is thinly veiled labelling him a communist.

More self preservation people with decent medical cover probably do not fancy risking their standard of care decrease so some random person they don't know can get free health care. In a perfect world everyone would say yes in the real world people will take better care them them and their kids over free care for everyone.

But to be fair, its not just about that. There are also those who genuinely believe that the government should be kept out of these things and dont mind donating money privately. Unfortunately these people are a small minority.

I don't think racism is the only factor here (even though it's an important one). People just tend to forget that the economic issues under Obama are just the results of the misdemeanor of the Bush administration, but they blame it on Obama.
And then there's the question of his approach towards Muslims. Considering the amount of religious nuts in the US, they consider that to be some form of treason.
And then finally, there's the issue of the healthcare. The idea is good, but many people there just don't think about it's positive long term effects, but they just see one thing: "Oh noes we have to pay for the healthcare of other people? They're stealing my money!!!"

Its a concept hard to grasp when we are used to live in countries with public health system, where any1 can just step on a public hospoital and receive aid.

But on the other side, for americans, payin a lot of taxes (hi Sweden) to mantain public services is something so alien, that i totally understand that Obamas reform is a pil hard to swallow.

I think it all depends on how u look at it:
- on one hand, the us middle class pays a lot less taxes than us. If over the course of a year, a man havent got any health problems, he would have gain more overall money than his european counterpart.
- on the other hand, if that same man got a lot of health problems, his hospital bills would tear a hole in his anual budget, while his european counterpart received the same treatments for free from the public health system he helps to mantain with his taxes.

I dont know. I guess I should experience the american model by myself and then judge, but being the unlucky bastard with a hernia that i am, I would be too scared from the huge american hospital bills

Yeah me neither (we pay around 30% net taxes over our annual incomes). But I understand that sum1 who never paid that amount of taxes might go nuts when his goverment suddendly starts charging high taxes for public services.

In that aspect America is a whole different world. In fact, the word "public" is even taboo in some environments
