I hate smoking a lot. Nothing worse than coming home from somewhere, be it a club or party or whatever and smelling like cold smoke.

aaaand.....what Cozak said =) But hey, as long as I'm not passively involved, people can smoke whatever they wish, if they think it's good for them. Just don't do it when I have to be near :p

Best pro-smoking argument I heard was a friend who said "I smoke because I want to be dead by the time I'm 30".

Couldn't argue with that.

If smokers just affected themselves I wouldn't mind, let people do what they want as long as they're aware of the risks. But since it affects everyone around the smoker as well...filthy habit, roll on the glorious time next year when it's finally banned in public places in the UK.

Yeah, had to spend evenings on lots of sites where people smoked over the last few months. Then did one in Scotland where the ban was already in place. It was heavenly.

Suspect I'll be going out a lot more next year.

Just a heads up for the rest of the UK people, the smoking ban on public places makes such a difference to a "night out", it is a far better experience :) And I've hardly heard any complaints from smokers up here about having to go outside, afterall, they have lots of people to talk to :)

Wish they'd ban cars, trains & planes too. Ohh & any power station that isn't based on big windmills, wave generators or nuclear power (but nuclear power's got some serious side-effects too so maybe that as well).

Next time you swich on the lights, think about what happened if you had no electricity, but cigarettes instead :p I think that quite clarifies the difference =)

If they banned everything which wasn't useful there'd be no more spectator sports (like football), no more internet games (or related forums) ... WTF banning everything which isn't useful would even get rid of 99% of the human race! Hell Yeah GOFORIT!!! :D

Ok, let's go over this again.

Useful and hazardous to a third person's health: cars
- Both aspects should be taken into consideration when deciding whether or not to allow them. Efforts should be done to minimalise the damage to one's health.

Useful and not hazardous to a third person's health: medicines
- Use it!

Not useful and hazardous to a third person's health: smoking
- Don't do it if it harms someone else's health. Feel free to do it if this risk is non-existant.

Not useful and not hazardous to a third person's health: football
- Feel free to do it, if you like to.

I wasn't saying ban useless things. I was merely providing a reason not to ban the items mentioned ;)

And the millions they'll save in NHS healthcare?

George W Bush springs to mind, along with most other politicians, burocrats, managers ...

Then ... alcohol, mobile phones, nuclear power, (sex?), ...

ah nm I can see I'm on to a loser here =/

(BTW: I do smoke, but 3-5 a day, never indoors or around other humans unless they're smokers too. I am opposed to inflicting my smoking on other people, but I do strongly feel that legislation isn't the way to achieve what should be possible with healthy human respect for others.)
