I currently have a JB3 and its only disadvantage is the size but overall it has amazing sound quality and good features.

I used to have a CD Player that would play MP3 files off a CD-RW. It was great for a while, though it was also cheap and no sooner did I get back from Canada did it break.

I now have a cheap and cheerful Sony CD player that plays off CD-RWs. It does me ok.

I keep watching out for new MP3 players but the small storage on the "affordable" models is always offputting for me. I guess if I saved up then I'd get an iPod, or one of the really big ones, but not as a Student...

I still use my Diamond Rio MP300 from years back, I got it in the USA when they first came out, I have a 32MB expansion card for it, works fine although the software is a bit dodgy under Windows XP :)

Got a Bang & Oulfsen - Beoplayer 2. Love it to bits, nowhere near as much storage as an iPod but always manages to hold any playlist of my MP3s I put together. WMP support is there but OGG is lacking, which is a bit of an arse but hey.

www.beoplayer.com

Before that I had a Strax 32MB jobbie that cost £50 off Amazon, very much cheap & cheerful but it did the job & if you can find one dirt cheap, worth picking up.

Ooo, the Beosound 2 is indeed gorgeous :D (worth it just for those headphones). Like you say, though, it's a shame the memory isn't larger, but at least it is expandable (and with style like that, at least it'll turn heads :D).

That's one thing that puts me off the Creative's MuVo player. Although it's undoubtedly amazing, the lack of any expandability is a little off putting (then again, Amazon are selling the 64Mb edition for £64.99 inc. P&P and with a free armband/holster worth around £15 . . . tempting :)).

Kind Regards

I've played with the idea of getting a big storage model, 10/20gb, primarily to use through my hifi. Although it would get used on holiday etc. Not really an audiophile, but this would seem easier than ripping dozems of CD's. Any downside to this plan?

Sounds like a good idea :) Most of the hard0drive portable audio players come with either Firewire or USB2.0 connections, so (providing your computer is relatively up to date, or can be updated) then uploading and downloading files is a breeze. As the storage medium is effectively a hard-drive, you can also upload normal computer files and use the system as a glorified removable drive :)

The only downsides I can think of are compatibility and price. Compatibility is a relatively minor issue, but not all players support all audio standards. Whilst virtually all support MP3, some lack support for superior standards such as WMA, OGG and Apple's iTunes AAC format. The price issue is somewhat more obvious: these things are expensive! Although in terms of pence-per-megabyte such large storage players work out far cheaper than standard 64/128Mb players, you can still expect to pay into the hundreds for a respectable system.

The best players on the market, or so I have been led to believe, are Apple's iPod and Creative's Jukebox Zen (and Creative's older DAP jukebox). Apple's iPod has recently been updated to v3, bringing with it new features and games (much to the annoyance of older iPod owners who now find their products lack these features and Apple are unwilling to provide an update, unless it is to provide support for their iTunes store). Personally, though, I'd say the Jukebox Zen looks set to steal the limelight. Sometime this month Creative will release an updated 60Gb model, which will retail at $100 less than Apple's top 30Gb iPod.

Whatever you choose, be sure to pick the right one (some versions only have Firewire connections, some only USB2.0/1.1, some only run on Macs, some only on Windows etc). Whichever company you go with, I think (but don't quote me on this) you should be able to connect them up to a standard hi-fi system, if only via an analogue cable, and then play as normal.

Kind Regards

I'd get the new 15GB iPod if i were you, nice stand, extra storage over the 10GB but no increase in weight and frankly 15GB would probably hold anything you'd ever care about :0

Have an 128MB I-Bead

Love it, very small, is nice sounding, very light, has radio etc :p

Only thing that i really hate is that the memory cant be upgraded at all.. and i could not afford the 256 version.

Being a poor ass student it had everything i wanted feature / size.. again, i hate the fact that it has so little memory :(

I wanted one of these . So cute and dinkie hehe

^^ me too

I have a Creative Muvo 64mb, ive had it for ages now and quite frankly 64mb is not enough, it can hold about an album in a resionble quality and is very small (size of a lighter).
The only reason i got it was because i couldnt be bothered carrying around a 'big' mini disk / cd player in my pockets, along with my wallet and phone.
Although i think they have released a 128mb version which is the same size hmmm might get it...

Oh God! I just saw how small the new iPods are... I was free of wanting one thinking they were quite chunky, but... but... but... it's so small and ... and... but my overdraft.... and .. but.

I got myself a Nomad Zen 2.0 about 3 months ago and i can happily say its the greatest gadget i heve ever bought. It really is good. I have my music Collection on it, 12 gigs so far and finding it hard to find more quality stuff to chuck on it.

The Ipod does look nice aswell, had a fiddle myself but the zen is a bit more useful as far as other things u can do with it (like transporting DVD .isos (*cough*) between freinds houses.

The software u get with the zen is disgusting tho, hence me visiting www.redchairsoftware.com and paying £15 for what basically turns ur zen into a 20 gig hdd, its a treat to use and if u considering a zen, its a must quite frankly
