Do you give a tip when paying for a haircut ?

I went to the hairdressers yesterday and forgot to give a tip. It cost £10 and I paid him £10. I only had £10 on me. New hairdressers, half asleep when I went, semi-hung over, didn't check for spare change, etc etc.

Anyway, the guy stared at me giving me this Vulcan death look as if to say "where's my fucking tip".

So, my question is, should you be made to feel like a Scrooge if you don't tip ?

Well, in finland tipping ain't even an issue.

People actually look at you weird if you do, and even some employees refuse the tip for tax etc reasons.

Then again, i haven't had a haircut in over 1.5 years so...

Tips are for good service at resturants imo

Never given a tip for a haircut, and I'd take offence if I gave the hairdresser £10 for £5 haircut and he kept the change as a tip tbh


EDIT: then again, I do just go in, sit down and say "just sort it out or whatever cheers", I honestly couldnt tell you what my 'hairstyle' is (if I have one), so I guess tipping hairdressers must be the reserve of people with fancy hair-do's

I tip because I go to the cheapy place where they don't pay the workers well so I give the lady about 50% tip in her pocket cause she is nice. If I give it at the end when I pay then they take half her tip

Paid £25 for a tony and guy job once, having my head rubbed by the fittest girl ever was nice, but not really worth the extra £18.

No, fast food isn´t the same thing. They´re just selling me what´s in the boiling oil behind them, it´s not a "service", pretty much like the clerk in a supermarket.
But for example a good waiter in the pub who´s attentive, friendly and knows if/when to talk deserves a few coins.

No. Cause I don´t smell of piss and I don´t whine that my McWhatnot isn´t beefy enough. I just go there, pick up my burger, pay for it and that´s it. They might deserve a few coins because they got a crap job, but that´s not my problem. If they had a job that requires more interaction with the customer, then I`d be the last one to deny them their tip. But as it is, it´s not the same sport. There´s no more interaction than with the guy who´s selling me my newspaper. Hello.. one XY.. here you are.. thank you.

I don´t expect anything in a fast food restaurant except getting my stuff more or less quickly. When I`m in a restaurant or a pub, I expect something more in terms of service. It´s the extra effort to make my visit comfortable that deserves the tip.

But it´s funny how people are criticizing and picking on those people who´re giving a tip in at least a couple of occasions while categorically refusing to give anything seems to be ok.

It's all about YOU and how YOU'RE served and what YOU require.

I was giving an example on how the McD workers DESERVE a tip also, as much as the fakesmiling tart at the "hippy i'm so rich" place.

I'm not critizising you by the way, i was talking about how generally people are quite hypocritical.

And sometimes it's just a cultural difference in what is considered good in tipping.

Yes, I would. In fact, I have done it a lot. Because I know it´s not the waitresses fault and if she´s still showing engagement by saying sorry or still being friendly, then why should I let her suffer for the bs that happened in the kitchen. As I said, I`m paying for the "extra" service.
On the other hand, I`m NOT giving a tip if the waitress is rude, slow, bored or giving me the feeling of bothering her, regardless of how good the food/beer/drink was.

I never tip exept on resturants,the amount i tip depends on the service and quality and maybe a little extra to a fit waitress. I also tip bartenders if they make good strong drinks. Didnt even know some people tipped haircutters etc and if you should tip taxi drivers in norway , it would be cheaper to take an airplane.
