Is good / evil the same thing, depending on which side of the line you stand ?
Is evil a real force ? Something that can be tapped in to ?
Or is it an invention of religion that you subscribe to (or not) ?
Is it just a convenient word to describe bad deeds ?
Or is it a load of bollocks ?

First, i have to say i don't believe religion had anything to do with it.

It's the basic need, of sorts, of people to blame something, ANYTHING other then the human. Because if we blame the human, we acknowledge that we arn't "perfect" and as such, anyone can be that human doing that bad thing.

So, evil is the very basic explanation, without details and spesifics, that can be used to differentiate those, from "us" and as such, protect ourselves from the daunting fact that we actually are the same, good or evil.

So, in a nutshell, i do believe that evil exists, but not as the reason for bad things, but as a much simpler concept; selfishnes without boundaries.

Hopefully that made some sense.

Agree somewhat with Tohtori.

I don't believe it 'exists' in the way you suggest. It can just be used as a desription. A sort of benchmark of behaviour. Its quite hard to discuss without being so generalised.

Once you define what evil entails you can then base what is morally wrong on that.

i believe evil to be similar to darkness, dryness etc - not a state of its own, merely the lack of its opposite. and oh, how subjective it is. in the end its just a word to describe something, and as spinoza said, those things that are welcome we label good, those that arent welcome we label evil. yet for some people the adjective 'evil' doesnt mean anything, just as words describing colors mean nothing to a (colour)blind person.

evil is just a necessity(sp?) to justify the "good" we do in this world. nothing more, nothing less.

And let's hope, just for futures sake, that never becomes a norm or a "proven" fact.

Might get a really bad future, with people getting jailed up for something they might do.

I don't really believe in the evil. I believe that ppl can do evil acts, but that's their own mind telling them to do so, and not an evil force taking control over a person and forcing them to do evil things

ps. Tom Cruise is the worst actor ever toht! He didn't make it look cool at all

Definitions of evil can very soo much, for example:

Everyone calls Hitler an evil person but for his point of view he was just doing what was necessary.

Being evil is just literature bollocks tbh.

Preacherboy, what a pile of horseshit.

Hes actually not necessarily wrong - There is a big question as to whether or not violence, aggression and other behavioural traits are inherited from one generation to another via genetics. I believe there has been evidence to suggest that behaviour can be strongly influenced from our genes. Just like hair/eye/skin colour, etc.

I dont know what I believe on this subject. I've always liked the stories of Good Vs Evil, Order Vs Chaos, Judgement day, etc. I see certain things as good/evil based on my upbringing, I guess I would say I believe in a kind of 'force' of Evil, and of Good.

For example, for me the greatest symbol of "Good" I can think of is the Union Jack. Every time I see it I cant help but smile - always makes me feel really good, proud and patroitic, I have a full size one on my bedroom wall :D

Its kind of funny really, but having thought about it, I guess for me the greatest symbol of "Evil" would be the stereotypical 'devil' - you know, red skin, horns etc :D for me that guy just summons up feelings of 'bad' and malevolent stuff every time - either that or the swastika, both are about equally evil in my mind.

the swastika

not itself evil, is it?
it's what you associate with the swastika, the genocide of millions, that is (what you believe to be) evil. and i agree with what downanael said about hitler - to him it was probably perfectly reasonable.
obviously, on my moral compass, genocide is about 180 from bunnies in love.

imo, there is no 'evil' force. there is no 'good' force either.
people cannot accept the blame that there is something intrinsically evil about the human race. everything is about what is best for yourself. people are *****.

people are *****.

While i agree on some points, did you just say that people are worthy of 5 stars? :D

In itself, what you said there, is true in both ways.

We are the worst of kinds, we are the best of kinds. Mankind, well, man-mostly-kind.

You have to commit a crime to be charged, seen program on TV about serial killers, they done brain scans on em, and a certain part of the brain was larger in em to the norm of the street, also they did test on em under pressure, and found they did not react to pressure, were the normal person would get sweaty palms they did not:p

You could apply the same logic to religion.
As for EVIL being a real force ? You need to meet my ex wife ..... then you will KNOW its for real.

Evil does exist, regardless of what relgion, if any, that you follow. I wouldnt say that it is a force per say, though i am sure the people that are deep into their relgion will tell you otherwise. However, it would be safe to say that its is just a way to represent what is considered unacceptable by the majority of any given society.

For example torture is seen, by almost all people, as unacceptable and the people that are into this sort of stuff would be considered to be evil. On the other hand people that eat other people would be considered evil by pretty much all people everywhere, however, in cultures where this is seen as acceptable - places like in New Guinea and parts of the forests of Congo - it was accepted practise (not 100% what they did it for but its reprehensible regardless). Well until they where shown the light.

Now for people that have religious beliefs, evil is quite clearly a force at work in everyday life. This can be seen on many levels (from a religious persons view), from the small things for example the lack of people attending prayers on Sundays (Fridays for Muslims) to things like the acceptance of gays as preachers /bishops. These are just a couple of easy examples and they are seen by many religious people as the forces of evil slowly making head way in the daily lives of people.

So i would conclude that the answer to the question lies with the individual person and how they view life and things like religion. Personally i fall into the second catagory of people, though not a deeply religious person (i have never been to a mosque) i firmly believe that their are forces at work, both evil and good in the world.

sure, what they do might be WRONG for the most part, but i realy dont see it as evil.

like torture for example. i'm not defending that per se mind. but there are certain "individuals" that nothing but torture might work on. say to reveal where a bigass bomb is set to trigger in a highly populated area. i don't know about you, but if that was the one and only way to make said individual to tell ppl where it is before it blows up x number of ppl, i'd say it would justify it. does that mean the ppl that did it are evil?

same with canibalism, seen that movie about a plane crasing in the alps and all they culd do to survive was to eat the dead? thats based on a true story btw for those that havent seen it. does that mean that they to were evil? i certainly don't.

i strongly suggest you stop looking at the world in black and white, as theres millions of cominations of grey out there to ;)

so no, "evil" is never something you can firmly point at and say, "thats evil". because you never know what caused it, unless its you yourself thats doing the "evil" part, and i bet u'd have a reasonable explanation for it thats 100% logic from your point of view...

Totally agree, the world is never black and white. Take torture, its been around as long as man has walked the earth. 99.9% of people could never do it given the opportunity.

Is torture wrong, yes. But, what if torturing someone, say a terrorist with information on the location of a biologial weapon in a major city, could save thousands or millions of lives. Is it still wrong, yes. Would it serve the greater good, yes.

I don't think there is a personification of evil as such but, from time to time it does seem to manifest itself in the actions of man. All the great warlords, tyrants, certain Popes and empire builders all probably thought they were doing the right thing but killing/enslaving/spreading religion to create it is obviously wrong. Yet it's part of all our history and without it we would probably still be in mud huts.

Power corrupts!

Ok i think maybe some clarification is needed here as you seem to have misunderstood my point. When i am talking about torture i am not refering to the current debate about waterboarding or Abu Ghariab or stuff like this.

What i am refering to is the deliberate torture that you hear about, people that do this for a perverse sense of pleasure. My intention is not to turn this post into some kind political debate at all as you seem to reason from my last post. i hope that clears that up.

same with canibalism, seen that movie about a plane crasing in the alps and all they culd do to survive was to eat the dead? thats based on a true story btw for those that havent seen it. does that mean that they to were evil? i certainly don't....

Just for your info the film is based on a true story about a Argentine rugby team whose plane crashes on top of the Andes in South America, not the Alps. The circumstances they found themselves in were exceptional circumstances, not one that a person is faced with on a daily basis and i dont think anyone would suggest that what they did was evil.

However, the case of the German guy a few years back who invited someone for dinner via the net and killed and ate him? what about that? Not evil for you?

.......so no, "evil" is never something you can firmly point at and say, "thats evil". ...

Sorry i beg to differ, there are many many things that i would consider evil, you may not agree with them being labelled as evil but that would be the differences that i was talking about when i said.....

..So i would conclude that the answer to the question lies with the individual person and how they view life and things like religion........

However, i cant see how anyone cannot call a person who molests kids evil because in my book they epitomise evil. Or rapists for that matter or the example of the German guy i mentioned above. A person that likes to torture people for fun cannot be called anything but evil but hey thats just my opinion on the matter maybe you see things differently.

.......because you never know what caused it, unless its you yourself thats doing the "evil" part, and i bet u'd have a reasonable explanation for it thats 100% logic from your point of view...

Sorry but there are a lot of things in life that are black and white and some actions of people can only be considered evil and tbfh i dont give a shit what the reason is for a molester being a molester he should just be shot /hung or castrated. Nor am i interested in hearing why a rapists is a rapist or for that matter why a sicko is a sicko.

PS Hawkwind how come no posts about Iran anymore? The latest report taken a bit of wind out of your sails? :D
